Diagnostic Test
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TEST CODE (DTC)
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
- Turn the ignition off. Leave the ignition off for 5 minutes.
- Start the engine.
- Allow the engine to run for 2 minutes.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the status Active for this DTC?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the Stored Lost Communication DTCs diagnostic procedure. Refer to STORED LOST COMMUNICATION DTCS .
- INSPECT THE ACTIVE GRILL SHUTTER ASSEMBLY FOR SIGNS OF PHYSICAL DAMAGE
- Inspect the Active Grill Shutter Assembly and connector for damage due to road debris.
Is the Active Grill Shutter Assembly or connector damaged or disconnected?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- Inspect the Active Grill Shutter Assembly and connector for damage due to road debris.
- CHECK THE GENERATOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off. Leave it off for 5 minutes.
- Disconnect the Generator Module harness connector.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
- Crank the engine for no more than 10 seconds if it will not start.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Does the DTC become active?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Replace the Generator in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE GLOW PLUG MODULE FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off. Leave it off for 5 minutes.
- Disconnect the Glow Plug Module harness connector.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
- Crank the engine for no more than 10 seconds if it will not start.
- With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Does the DTC become active?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Replace the Glow Plug Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (D511) LIN BUS CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO OTHER CIRCUITS IN THE PCM C1 HARNESS CONNECTOR
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Glow Plug Module harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (D511) LIN Bus circuit and all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms on all other circuits?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (D511) LIN Bus circuit for a short to the circuit that measured less than 10k Ohms.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (D511) LIN BUS CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D511) LIN Bus circuit at the Glow Plug Module harness connector.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (D511) LIN Bus circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D511) LIN Bus circuit at the Glow Plug Module harness connector.
- CHECK THE (D511) LIN BUS CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (D511) LIN Bus circuit between the Glow Plug Module harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the (D511) LIN Bus circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Measure the resistance of the (D511) LIN Bus circuit between the Glow Plug Module harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
- CHECK THE (A940) FUSED B+ CIRCUIT FOR PROPER VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the AGS harness connector.
- Measure the voltage at the (A940) Fused B+ circuit at the AGS harness connector.NOTE:
The (A940) Fused B+ circuit is supplied to two terminals at the AGS Assembly. Be sure to check both circuits.
Is the voltage equal to battery voltage?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Repair the (A940) Fused B+ circuit for an open or short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (Z904) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (Z904) Ground circuit at the AGS harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Repair the (Z904) Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (Z904) Ground circuit at the AGS harness connector.
- CHECK FOR DAMAGED WIRES OR DAMAGED TERMINALS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Glow Plug Module and the PCM.
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 11
- CHECK THE ACTIVE GRILL SHUTTER ASSEMBLY FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Replace the Active Grill Shutter Assembly in accordance with the service information. Navigate to Miscellaneous functions and perform the 'Active Grille Shutter Replaced' procedure.
- Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- With the scan tool, actuate the AGS Assembly.
- With the scan tool, view DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair complete.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
