Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TEST CODE (DTC)
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is this DTC active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any P05F3 or P05F5 DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE BATTERIES AND CHARGING SYSTEM FOR PROPER VOLTAGE AND OPERATION
- Check the Batteries and charging system for proper system voltage and operation.
Are the Batteries and charging system operating correctly and producing the proper system voltage?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Diagnose and repair the Batteries and charging system before continuing.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check the Batteries and charging system for proper system voltage and operation.
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS NOTE:
Repair any Voltage Low DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.
NOTE:The Datalinks are BUS circuits which the PCM uses to communicate with the Particulate Matter Sensor, DEF Heating Control Unit, NOx Sensor 1/1 and Nox Sensor 1/2. If a Datalink circuit is shorted or one of these components is internally shorted, communication will be lost and DTCs will set against ALL of these components.
Are there lost communication DTCs present against any components (other than Particulate Matter Sensor) listed in the note above?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE FUSED IGNITION SWITCH CIRCUIT AND THE PARTICULATE MATTER SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND OR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the engine off.
- Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on, engine off.
- Measure the voltage across the Fused Ignition Switch circuit and the Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit at the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
Does the voltage read within 1.0 Volt of battery voltage?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the Fused Ignition Switch circuit for an open or short to ground, or check the Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit for an open.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both circuits?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms for either circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Datalink circuit that measured above 5.0 Ohms for an open/high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.NOTE:
Disregard any resistance between 50 and 70 Ohms between the (D469) High Datalink (+) and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) pins.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both measurements?
Yes
- Replace the Particulate Matter Sensor in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit for a short to the circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE COMPONENTS ON THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
Disconnect only one component at a time during this next step. If the DTCs for the components that are STILL CONNECTED change from active to stored, the component that was disconnected is faulty. If all of the DTCs remain active, then the disconnected component is not the problem. Reconnect each component before going on to the next one so that only one component is disconnected at a time.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Reconnect all four components connected to the Datalink circuits.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off the three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector.
- Disconnect the DEF Heater Control Unit harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
Did the status of the DTCs change to stored for the components STILL CONNECTED when disconnecting any one of the components listed above?
Yes
- Replace the component that caused the DTC change from active to stored in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- CHECK THE (F204) FUSED IGNITION SWITCH CIRCUIT AND THE NOX SENSOR 1/1 GROUND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND OR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the engine off.
- Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on, engine off.
- Measure the voltage across the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit and the Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit at the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
Does the voltage read within 1.0 Volt of battery voltage?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Repair the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit for an open or short to ground, or check the Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit for an open.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both circuits?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms for either circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Datalink circuit that measured above 5.0 Ohms for an open/high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 13
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.NOTE:
Disregard any resistance between 50 and 70 Ohms between the (D469) High Datalink (+) and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) pins.
Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both measurements?
Yes
- Go To 14
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit for a short to the circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE PARTICULATE MATTER SENSOR FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
The Particulate Matter Sensor consists of a Module and a Probe (with a harness in between) which cannot be serviced separately. They are replaced as one unit.
- Replace the Particulate Matter Sensor in accordance with the service information.
- Reconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
- Start the engine and run it until it reaches operating temperature.
- Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions.NOTE:
During cold ambient temperatures, it may be necessary to test drive the vehicle for an extended period to properly cycle the fail conditions for this DTC.
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Does the scan tool display this DTC?
Yes
- Go To 15
No
- Test complete.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
