Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TEST CODE (DTC)
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, record any environmental data and record all DTCs on the repair order.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is this DTC Active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS NOTE:
Repair any Voltage Low DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.
NOTE:The Datalink is a BUS circuit which the PCM uses to communicate with the DEF Quality Sensor, Turbo Actuator, DEF Heater Control Unit, NOx Sensor 1/1, NOx Sensor 1/2, Intake Swirl Actuator, and Particulate Matter (PM) Sensor. If the Datalink in the engine harness or vehicle harness is shorted, communication lost DTC's will be set against these devices. These devices share the same fused battery supply circuit in the PDC. All sensors will lose communication and set DTCs if the fuse is blown.
Are there lost communication DTCs present against ALL the components listed above?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE DEF QUALITY SENSOR CONNECTOR FOR CORROSION OR FOREIGN MATERIAL
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Disconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.NOTE:
Check connectors for corrosion or foreign materials- Clean/repair as necessary.
- Reconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.
- Test drive the vehicle for an extended amount of time.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair is complete.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE BATTERIES AND CHARGING SYSTEM FOR PROPER VOLTAGE AND OPERATION
- Check the Batteries and charging system for proper system voltage and operation.
Is the system voltage normal?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Diagnose and repair the Batteries and charging system before continuing.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check the Batteries and charging system for proper system voltage and operation.
- CHECK THE DEF QUALITY SENSOR POWER AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
- Disconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.
- Measure the voltage across the (F343) ASD Supply circuit and the (Z908) Ground circuit at the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.
Does the voltage read within 1.0 volt of Battery voltage?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (F343) ASD Supply circuit for an open or short to ground, or check the (Z908) Ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE J1939 DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector.
- Disconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the Turbo Actuator harness connector.
- Disconnect the PM Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the Intake Swirl Actuator harness connector.
- Disconnect the DEF Heater Control Unit harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.NOTE:
Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) Datalink (+) circuit between the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Datalink (-) circuit between the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for both circuits?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Quality Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit that measured above 3.0 Ohms for an open or high resistance.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE COMPONENTS ON THE DATALINK CIRCUITS NOTE:
Disconnect only one component at a time during this next step. If the DTCs for the components that are STILL CONNECTED change from active to stored, the component that was disconnected is faulty. If all of the DTCs remain active, then the disconnected component is not the problem. Reconnect each component before going on to the next one so that only one component is disconnected at a time.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector.
- Disconnect the Turbo Actuator harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the Turbo Actuator harness connector.
- Disconnect the DEF Heater Control Unit harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the DEF Heater Control Unit harness connector.
- Disconnect the Intake Swirl Actuator harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the Intake Swirl Actuator harness connector.
- Disconnect the PM Sensor harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off 3 times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.NOTE:
Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition off and reconnect the PM Sensor harness connector.
Did the status of the DTCs change to stored for the components STILL CONNECTED when disconnecting any one of the components listed above?
Yes
- Replace the component that caused the DTC change from active to stored in accordance with the Service Information.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1, NOx Sensor Module 1/2, DEF Heater Control Unit, DEF Quality Sensor, Turbo Actuator, Intake Swirl Actuator, PM Sensor, and PCM C1 harness connectors.
- Measure for continuity between ground and the (D469) Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure for continuity between ground and the (D468) Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and either Datalink circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Datalink circuit that measured a short to ground.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO OTHER CIRCUITS
- Measure for continuity between the (D469) Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector and all other circuits in the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure for continuity between the (D468) Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector and all other circuits in the PCM C1 harness connector.NOTE:
Disregard any resistance between 50 and 70 Ohms between the (D469) Datalink (+) circuit and the (D468) Datalink (-) pins.
Is there continuity between the Datalink circuits and any other circuits?
Yes
- Repair the Datalink circuit for a short another circuit.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (D468) Datalink (-) circuit between the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (D469) Datalink (+) circuit between the DEF Quality Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for both circuits?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Repair the Datalink circuit for an open or high resistance.
- After the appropriate repair has been made, the vehicle must be operated in the manner described in the "When Monitored" service information above to clear the inducement and the EVIC message. Clearing the code will not clear the inducement or the EVIC message. In the extreme situation that the diagnostic will not run again, the PCM can be reflashed to clear the inducement and the EVIC message.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
