Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    1. Using the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, using the scan tool, run and save a Vehicle Scan Report, Freeze frame Data, and any other recorded information available.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Perform several ignition cycles leaving the ignition on for at least 10 seconds then off for 10 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle under the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. Using the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return as Active or Pending?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the appropriate INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Fuel System, EGR, CAC, Intake Air, or Turbocharger-related DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE AIR FILTER AND THE AIR CLEANER BODY FOR LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Check the Air Cleaner Body for cracks, out of position, improperly secured lid, or other damage.
    3. Remove and inspect the Air Filter for soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction.

      Were any of these problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR ICE BUILD UP OR WATER RESIDUE 
    NOTE:

    Ice build up or water residue in the Intake Air System can cause this DTC to set.

    NOTE:

    The Vehicle Owner should be advised to use a Winter Front cover during cold ambient conditions.

    1. Inspect all hoses/tubes and connections within the Intake Air System and Turbocharger for ice build up or water residue. Pay particular attention to the Charge Air Cooler.

      Was there any ice build up or water residue in the Intake Air System or Charge Air System?

      Yes 

      • Thaw out any ice, remove any water residue. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle under the conditions that set the DTC.
      • If the DTC still returns as Active or Pending: Go To  5
      • If the DTC does not return: Removing the ice and water repaired the condition. Advise the Vehicle Owner to use a Cold Weather Front End Cover during cold ambient temperatures.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. VISUALLY INSPECT THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM, CHARGE AIR COOLER AND EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE FOR LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS 
    NOTE:

    Damaged, restricted, or poorly connected intake air and Turbocharger related tubes can cause this DTC to set.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Visually inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and Turbocharger related hoses/tubes and connections for poor fitting, leaks, or restrictions.
    3. Visually inspect the Charge Air Cooler hoses/tubes and connections for poor fitting, leaks, or restrictions.
      NOTE:

      The PCM uses the EGR Airflow Control Valve to meter the amount of fresh air entering the Intake Manifold. This metered fresh air controls the amount of surface pressure on the EGR Valve. The PCM uses this method to enhance control over exhaust gas recirculation. The EGR Airflow Control Valve is sometimes called: 'Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA)'.

    4. Visually inspect the EGR Air Flow Control Valve to confirm that the valve is not stuck in the closed position.

      Were any problems found in the Intake Air System, Charge Air System, or EGR Airflow Control Valve system?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. PERFORM THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST 
    1. Perform the Intake Air System Leak Detection procedure found in: 09 Engine/Diagnosis and Testing. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION .

      Were any Intake Air System leaks found using the Smart Pressure smoke machine?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR CONNECTOR AND TERMINALS 
    1. Check the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector for proper connection at the Boost Pressure Actuator.
    2. Verify that the connector is completely plugged in and locked prior to disconnecting.
    3. Disconnect the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector and check for pushed out, corroded or spread terminals.

      Were any issues found with the connector or terminals?

      Yes 

      • Repair the terminals or properly connect and lock the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE FUSED ASD RELAY (F343) OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR HIGH RESISTANCE BY LOAD TESTING THE CIRCUIT 
    NOTE:

    Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT TESTING PROCEDURES .

    1. Disconnect the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not load test any circuits with components still connected to the circuit.

    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Load test the Fused ASD Relay (F343) Output circuit at the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector. Note:  refer to the example illustration.

      NOTE:

      The bulb on the load test tool should be illuminated and bright if there is no resistance in the circuitry. Compare the brightness of the bulb in the load test tool to that of a direct connection across Battery.

      Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Repair the Boost Pressure Actuator (F343) Output circuit for an open or high resistance. If the fuse is found to be open, check the circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  9. CHECK THE (Z908) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR HIGH RESISTANCE BY LOAD TESTING THE CIRCUIT 
    NOTE:

    Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT TESTING PROCEDURES .

    1. Turn the ignition off.
      CAUTION:

      Do not load test any circuits with components still connected to the circuit.

    2. Load test the (Z908) Ground circuit at the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector (A). Note:  refer to the diagram below.

      NOTE:

      The bulb on the load test tool should be illuminated and bright if there is no resistance in the circuitry. Compare the brightness of the bulb in the load test tool to that of a direct connection across Battery.

      Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?

      Yes 

      • Go To

      No 

  10. CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR (K137) CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    NOTE:

    The PCM uses Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) to control the position of the Turbo Actuator pushrod. The PCM sends these commands on the K137 circuit. This makes it a 'control' circuit. In the wiring diagrams, it is called a 'signal' circuit.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM harness connector.
    4. Check the resistance of the Boost Pressure Actuator (K137) Control circuit between the Boost Pressure Actuator harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the (K137) Boost Pressure Actuator Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
