Diagnostic Test

- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any Fuel System or Performance DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK FOR INTAKE SYSTEM LEAK OR RESTRICTION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Perform a thorough inspection of the intake system. Look for any leaks or restrictions. Pay special attention to the Charge Air Cooler and hoses.
- Remove the Mass Air Flow Sensor from the inlet tube.
- Seal off and/or plug the where the MAF sensor was removed.
- Connect the smoke machine 84-04 to the intake system where possible and begin injecting smoke into the system.
- Observe all intake system components for evidence of smoke leakage.
Were any leaks or restrictions found?
Yes
- Repair the leak or restriction in the intake system.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR A LEAK OR RESTRICTION
- Perform a thorough inspection of the exhaust system. Look for any leaks or restrictions.
Were any leaks or restrictions found?
Yes
- Repair the leak or restriction in the exhaust system.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Perform a thorough inspection of the exhaust system. Look for any leaks or restrictions.
- CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
- Perform a thorough inspection of the EGR system. Look for signs of a leak or restriction.
Is the EGR system operating properly?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the EGR System as needed.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Perform a thorough inspection of the EGR system. Look for signs of a leak or restriction.
- CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
.
Is the fuel system operation normal?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the fuel system as needed.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
.
- CHECK THE O2 SENSOR OPERATION
- Install the Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Connect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Connect the O2 Sensor harness connector.
- Start the engine.
- Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. It may be necessary to test drive the vehicle to confirm repair.
- Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is the DTC Active?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Replace the Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
