Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR SCR, REDUCTANT, NOX, OR EGT DTCS NOTE:
If there are any other SCR, Reductant, or NOx related DTCs present, the Diagnostics must be completed for those DTCs first before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) related DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- Using the scan tool, view DTCs.
Are there any other SCR, Reductant, NOx, or EGT DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the Diagnostics for the SCR, Reductant, NOx, EGT DTC(s).
- Then, come back and begin the Diagnostic Tree for this DTC (P249C-00) again.
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK FOR DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID LEAK
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and actuate the DEF Injector (Dosing Valve) Actuator Test.NOTE:
This will pressurize the system, making a leak easier to see.
- Inspect for signs of a Diesel Exhaust Fluid leak at:
- DEF Injector and Injector connectors.
- DEF Heater Line.
- DEF Supply Pump Assembly.
NOTE:Diesel exhaust fluid will form white deposits around leaky fittings.
Were any leaks found?
Yes
- Repair or replace the faulty component in accordance with the Service Information.
- Then, go back to the beginning of the Diagnostic Tree for this DTC (P249C-00) and start over.
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE RATIONALITY OF THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSORS
- Start the engine.
- Raise the engine speed to 2500 RPMs for two minutes.
Do the temperature readings of the Exhaust Temperature Sensors change in value at least 5°F?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Replace the Exhaust Temperature Sensor that did not change in value by at least 5°F or is not updating.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE RATIONALITY OF THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSORS
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 10 minutes.
- With the scan tool, read the values of the Exhaust Temperature Sensors.
Do both temperature sensors read above 150°F and are the values of the temperature sensors updating?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Replace the Exhaust Temperature Sensor that is not above 150°F or is not updating on the scan tool.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE DEF VOLUME FROM THE INJECTOR
- Turn ignition off.
- Remove the DEF Injector from the decomposition tube.NOTE:
Leave the DEF Injector harness connector attached to the DEF Injector.
- Place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool, begin the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.NOTE:
This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air Bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main Volume Test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF Purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). The entire procedure will run for 2-3 minutes before timing out. The amount of flow may fluctuate throughout the test, therefore the test must be allowed to run completely in order for the results to be accurate. The fluid should spray out as a mist. There should be no dripping from the holes in the DEF Injector at any time during the duration of the test procedure.
- Measure the amount of fluid sprayed after the test times out.
Does the fluid sprayed measure between 26 ml and 35 ml?
Yes
- Replace the SCR Catalyst in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- If above 35 ml: Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- If below 26 ml: Go To 7
- CHECK THE DEF SUPPLY LINE FOR A RESTRICTION
- Check the DEF Supply line for a restriction.
Was there a restriction in the DEF Supply line?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Supply line in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Check the DEF Supply line for a restriction.
- CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DEF SUPPLY PUMP AFTER REPLACING THE DEF INJECTOR
- Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the Service Information.NOTE:
At this time, the DEF Volume test must be performed again.
- Turn ignition off.
- Remove the DEF Injector from the decomposition tube.NOTE:
Leave the DEF Injector harness connector attached to the DEF Injector.
- Place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool, begin the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.NOTE:
This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air Bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main Volume Test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF Purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). Is the DEF Volume test result still below 26 ml?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Supply Pump in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the Service Information.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
