Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Sensor Reference DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (K852) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (K852) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the voltage reading above 4.8 volts?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

  4. CHECK THE APP SENSOR 2 (K29) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

  5. CHECK THE APP SENSOR 2 (K29) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUITS 
    1. Measure the resistance between the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit and the (K400) Sensor Ground circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit and the (K167) Sensor Ground circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms between the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit and both Sensor Ground circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit for a short to the circuit that measured below 10k Ohms.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE APP SENSOR 2 (K29) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit between the APP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Reconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    2. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Turn the ignition off.
    6. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    7. Connect a jumper between the (K852) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the APP Sensor 2 (K29) Signal circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.
    8. Turn the ignition on.
    9. With the scan tool, view DTCs.
      NOTE:

      The scan tool should display a P2128-Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 2 High DTC as active or pending with the jumper in place.

      Does the scan tool display the DTC as described above?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
