Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    NOTE:

    The APP Sensor No. 2 signal should always be approximately 1/2 the voltage of the APP Sensor No. 1 signal.

    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Sensor Reference DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE APP SENSOR NO. 1 (K23) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance between ground and the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

  4. CHECK FOR THE APP SENSOR NO. 1 (K23) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUITS 
    1. Measure the resistance between the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit and the APP Sensor No. 1 (K167) Sensor Ground circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit and the APP Sensor No. 2 (K400) Sensor Ground circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both measurements?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

  5. CHECK THE APP SENSOR NO. 1 (K23) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit between the APP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Reconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    2. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Turn the ignition off.
    6. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector.
    7. Connect a jumper between the 5-Volt Supply circuit and the APP Sensor No. 1 (K23) Signal circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector.
    8. Turn the ignition on.
    9. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
      NOTE:

      The scan tool should display an Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor No. 1 High DTC as active with the jumper in place.

      Does the scan tool display the DTC as described above?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE 
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
