Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR OTHER CATALYST OR NOX DTCS NOTE:
If there are any other Catalyst or NOx related DTCs present, the diagnostics must be completed for those DTCs first before continuing with this one. Any Diagnostics and/or repairs done for Catalyst or NOx related DTCs must be followed by performing the diagnostic procedure for P20EE-00. If this DTC of P20EE-00 set along with P2BA9-00 please perform the diagnostic for P2BA9-00 first followed by P20EE-00.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- Using the scan tool, go to Reports, generate a Vehicle Scan Report, include all information, and send it to the Support Group.
- Using the scan tool, view DTCs.
Are there any other Catalyst or NOx DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the Diagnostics for the Catalyst or NOx DTC(s).
No
- Go To 2
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Visually inspect the entire exhaust system for signs of a leak.
Were any exhaust leaks found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- Visually inspect the entire exhaust system for signs of a leak.
- CHECK FOR DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID LEAK
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and actuate the DEF Injector (Dosing Valve) Actuator Test.NOTE:
This will pressurize the system, making a leak easier to see.
- Inspect for signs of a Diesel Exhaust Fluid leak at:
- DEF Injector and Injector connectors.
- DEF Pressure Line.
- DEF Supply Pump Assembly.
NOTE:Diesel exhaust fluid will form white deposits around leaky fittings.
Were any leaks found?
Yes
- Repair or replace the faulty component in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE DEF QUALITY
- Turn the ignition off.
- Test the quality of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID
.
Were there any problems found with the quality of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid?
Yes
- Drain and refill the DEF tank with the correct application Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK FOR DEPOSITS IN THE DECOMPOSITION TUBE
- Remove the DEF Injector from the Decomposition Tube.
- Visually inspect the Decomposition Tube for diesel exhaust fluid deposits.
Were any deposits found?
Yes
- Clean the deposits from the Decomposition Tube.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE DEF VOLUME FROM THE INJECTOR
- Turn ignition off.
- Remove the DEF Injector from the Decomposition Tube.NOTE:
Leave the DEF Injector harness connector attached to the DEF Injector.
- Place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool, begin the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.NOTE:
This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air Bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main Volume Test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF Purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). The entire procedure will run for 2-3 minutes before timing out. The amount of flow may fluctuate throughout the test, therefore the test must be allowed to run completely in order for the results to be accurate. The fluid should spray out as a mist. There should be no dripping from the holes in the DEF Injector at any time during the duration of the test procedure.
- Measure the amount of fluid sprayed after the test times out.
Does the fluid sprayed measure between 26 ml and 35 ml?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- If above 35 ml: Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- If below 26 ml: Go To 7
- CHECK THE DEF SUPPLY LINE FOR A RESTRICTION
- Check the DEF Supply line for a restriction.
Was there a restriction in the DEF Supply line?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Supply line in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Go To Step 8
No
- Go To 8
- Check the DEF Supply line for a restriction.
- DEF SUPPLY PUMP
- Turn ignition off.
- Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the service information. Do not install the DEF Injector back into the Decomposition Tube.NOTE:
At this time, the DEF Volume test must be performed again.
- With the DEF Injector still removed from the Decomposition Tube place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.NOTE:
Connect the DEF Injector harness connector to the DEF Injector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool, begin the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.NOTE:
This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air Bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main Volume Test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF Purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). The entire procedure will run for 2-3 minutes before timing out. - Measure the amount of fluid sprayed after the test times out.
Is the DEF Volume test result still below 26 ml?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Supply Pump in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK FOR A DAMAGED DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)
- Inspect for signs of a damaged DPF by doing the following:
- Check for signs of heavy soot build-up between the DPF and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
- Check for signs of heavy soot build-up on the tail pipe.
- Check for cracks at the DPF outlets using a scope.
Were any issues found?
Yes
- Replace the Diesel Particulate Filter in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- Inspect for signs of a damaged DPF by doing the following:
- CHECK THE NOX SENSORS
- Check the NOx Sensors for wiring damage. If any issues are found repair the problem in accordance with the Service Information.
- Check for an offset/gain on the NOx Sensors.
- Perform a Service Regeneration using the scan tool. This step will prevent the DPF Regeneration from occurring during testing and clean out the SCR.
- Perform the following actions and then complete the corresponding repair:
Diagnostic Table Task Question Repair Action 1. Drive the vehicle at speeds at or above 55mph and perform multiple long coast downs. During coast downs monitor the NOx Sensors using the scan tool. Are either of the NOx Sensors showing a value > 20ppm or < -20ppm? - Yes - Replace that particular NOx Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- No - Move on to the second row of this table.
2. Using the scan tool monitor the Exhaust Gas Temperature and NOx Sensors at engine idle until all Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor readings are close to 150°C (302°F). Is the NOx Sensor 2 value > 40ppm above NOx Sensor 1? - Yes - Replace the NOx Sensor 2 in accordance with the Service Information.
- No - Drive the vehicle at speeds at or above 55mph for 45 minutes.
NOTE:If either or both NOx Sensor(s) have been replaced the vehicle must be driven at speeds at or above 55mph for 45 minutes to confirm the repair.
Did DTC P20EE return after the road test?
Yes
- Replace the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair complete.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
