Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK THE DEF TANK LEVEL AND FLUID 
    NOTE:

    Inspect the Diesel Exhaust Fluid before continuing with this Diagnostic Tree. If there is evidence of contamination or degraded fluid; Perform the Diagnosis and Testing - Diesel Exhaust Fluid procedure.

    Refer to DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID EMISSIONS [EXJ], DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .

    1. Verify the DEF Tank level.
    2. Check the fluid for signs of contamination.

      Is the fluid level in the DEF Tank above the minimum requirement and free of contamination?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Fill the DEF Tank to the proper level with clean Diesel Exhaust Fluid. If the fluid is contaminated, perform the cleaning procedure.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  2. VERIFY DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID (DEF) TANK TEMPERATURE 
    1. With the scan tool, verify tank temperature.

      Is the temperature below 12°F (-11°C)?

      Yes 

      • Let vehicle thaw in a warm area, above freezing until the tank temperature reads above 32°F (0°C) before continuing diagnosis.
      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data and record all DTCs on the repair order.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on, run the engine to operating temperature
    6. Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions to induce the DEF system.
    7. With the scan tool check for active DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  4. CHECK THE DEF PUMP SUPPLY LINES FOR LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and actuate the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.
    3. Visually inspect the DEF Pump Supply lines for leaks or restrictions.

      Are there any leaks or restrictions present?

      Yes 

      • Repair the DEF Pump Supply line for a leak or restriction. Reset the SCR Timer: With the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE DEF PUMP ASSEMBLY 
    1. Stop actuation of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.
    2. Reconnect all the DEF lines.
    3. Turn the ignition off.
    4. Remove the DEF Injector from the exhaust pipe.
    5. Inspect and remove any crystallization build-up on the exhaust side of the injector.
    6. Place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
    7. Turn the ignition on.
    8. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and actuate the DEF Injector Quantity Test.
      NOTE:

      This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main volume test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). The entire procedure will run for 2-3 minutes before timing out. The amount of flow may fluctuate throughout the test; therefore, the test must be allowed to run completely in order for the results to be accurate. The fluid should spray out as a mist. There should be no dripping from the holes in the DEF Injector at any time during the duration of the test procedure.

    9. Measure the amount of fluid sprayed after the test times out.

      Does the fluid sprayed measure between 26ml and 35ml?

      Yes 

      • Repair complete. Reset the SCR Timer: With the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. REPLACE THE DEF INJECTOR 
    1. Replace the DEF Injector.
    2. Place the DEF injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and actuate the DEF Injector Quantity Test.
      NOTE:

      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Replace the supply line and run the Override Test again. If the test fails with the new line, then replace the DEF Pump Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the PCM Verification Test.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
