Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.NOTE:
Inspect the Diesel Exhaust Fluid before continuing with this Diagnostic Tree. If there is evidence of contamination or degraded fluid; Perform the Diagnostic and Testing - Diesel Exhaust Fluid procedure.
Refer to DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID EMISSIONS [EXJ], DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
Ignition on, engine not running.
Are there any other DEF Supply Pump DTCs or are DTCs P208A, P208C, or P208D active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID
- Check the DEF for the following conditions:
- Frozen DEF. (Frozen DEF can potentially cause cavitation in the tank if the ambient temperature is drastically low.)
- Low DEF level.
- Recent DEF Pump or line replacement. (If the Pump or Line was recently replaced this can cause a potential for air to cause a fault.)
Were there any issues found with the DEF?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 4
- Check the DEF for the following conditions:
- CHECK THE DEF PUMP SUPPLY LINES FOR LEAKS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Visually inspect the DEF Pump Supply lines for leaks.
Are there any leaks present?
Yes
- Repair the DEF Pump Supply line(s) that are leaking. Reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION Test. Then, begin this Diagnostics again starting with the 'DTC IS ACTIVE' Test Step.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE DEF PUMP FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool perform "DEF Dosing Injection Quantity" test.NOTE:
When the DEF Injector (Dosing Valve) Actuator Test is initiated, the DEF Injector is opened. Wait 30 seconds before checking for leaks.
Did the test abort or fail to build pressure prior to dosing?
Yes
- Replace the DEF Pump. Reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the PCM VERIFICATION Test.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE DEF INJECTOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition on.
- Remove the DEF injector from the exhaust in accordance with the Service Information.
- Connect DEF injector lines and connectors.
- Using the scan tool perform "DEF Dosing Injection Quantity" test.
- Capture the DEF fluid injected during the routine.
Was the captured amount of fluid between 26-35 ml (0.88-1.18 oz)?
No
- Replace the DEF Injector. Reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, go to Misc. Functions>SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer). Also, test drive the vehicle for 30 miles before beginning the PCM VERIFICATION Test.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
Yes
- Go To 7
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
