Diagnostic Test

- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN NOTE:
Before beginning this Diagnostic Tree, an inspection of the DEF Tank is required to verify the following conditions:
- The fluid level in the DEF Tank must be greater than 1/4 full.
- The DEF Tank must not be filled all the way to the top (slight air pocket present).
- The temperature of the fluid in the DEF Tank must be greater than 0°C (32°F).
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Perform several ignition cycles turning the ignition off for at least 60 seconds between each cycle.
- Start the engine and allow to reach operating temperature.
- Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions for a minimum of 10 km (6.2 mi.) on roads with less than a 4% grade.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Before beginning this Diagnostic Tree, an inspection of the DEF Tank is required to verify the following conditions:
- The fluid level in the DEF Tank must be greater than 1/4 full.
- The DEF Tank must not be filled all the way to the top (slight air pocket present).
- The temperature of the fluid in the DEF Tank must be greater than 0°C (32°F).
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Perform several ignition cycles turning the ignition off for at least 60 seconds between each cycle.
- Start the engine and allow to reach operating temperature.
- Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions for a minimum of 10 km (6.2 mi.) on roads with less than a 4% grade.
- With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return as Active or Pending?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- Check the fluid level in the DEF Tank. If the tank is overfilled drain the tank and refill to the appropriate level. Do not overfill the DEF Tank, a slight air pocket must be at the top of the tank. Inform the customer of the proper DEF Tank refill level.
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any DEF Level circuit Low or High DTCs or DEF Heater-related DTCs Active or Pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 4
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- VISUALLY INSPECT FOR ICE FORMATION IN THE DEF TANK NOTE:
Ice forming on the inside of the DEF Tank can set this DTC.
- INSTALL A NEW DEF LEVEL/TEMPERATURE SENSOR ASSEMBLY (ENTIRE DEF TANK) AND RETEST FOR DTC
- Turn the ignition off.
- Install a new DEF Level/Temperature Sensor Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. (Must replace entire DEF Tank).
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
- Start the engine and allow to reach operating temperature.
- Test drive the vehicle during normal operating conditions.
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Does the scan tool display this DTC?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Test complete. If P241D was also present, it will be necessary to reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, navigate to Misc. Functions> SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer).
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. If P241D was also present, it will be necessary to reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, navigate to Misc. Functions> SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer).
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired. If P241D was also present, it will be necessary to reset the SCR Timer: Using the scan tool, navigate to Misc. Functions> SCR Extend Mileage W Active Fault (and reset the Timer).
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
