Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any Mass Air Flow DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE AIR FILTER FOR AIR FLOW RESTRICTION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove and inspect the Air Filter for soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction.
Were any of these problems found?
Yes
- Replace the Air Filter element.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE AIR INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS FOR AIR RESTRICTIONS NOTE:
Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.
NOTE:Inspect the exhaust system and related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.
- Inspect the intake system, exhaust system and related tubes and connections.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Inspect the intake system, exhaust system and related tubes and connections.
- CHECK THE INTAKE SYSTEM FOR AIR LEAKS
- Remove the Inlet Pressure Sensor.
- Connect smoke machine to the Inlet Pressure Sensor port in the intake duct and begin injecting smoke into the intake system.
- Observe all intake system components for evidence of smoke leakage.
Is there evidence of smoke leakage?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE EGR COOLER AND TUBES FOR AIR FLOW RESTRICTION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Gain access to and inspect the EGR Cooler and both tubes that connect to the EGR Cooler. Check tubes and cooler for damage, leaks, excessive carbon build up and other problems that could restrict or prevent proper exhaust gas flow.NOTE:
Compressed air (at low pressure) can be applied to the lower port of the EGR Cooler. When applying compressed air check for air to flow through cooler and out the upper port. Always wear safety glasses when working with compressed air.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the EGR Valve.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
