Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any PCM DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM FOR A LEAK
- Turn the ignition off.
- Inspect the entire fuel system for leakage.
Is there any evidence of leakage?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM FOR CONTAMINATION
- Inspect the fuel system for contamination.
Is the fuel contaminated?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Inspect the fuel system for contamination.
- CHECK THE ENGINE FOR PROPER STARTING CONDITIONS
- CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR FOR PROPER PRESSURE
- With the scan tool, compare the Fuel Pressure Set point with the Actual Fuel Pressure.NOTE:
A sticking Fuel Pressure Regulator is indicated by the Actual Fuel Pressure gradually dropping below the Fuel Pressure Setpoint then suddenly increasing (spiking) above the Fuel Pressure Setpoint.
Does the Actual Fuel Pressure gradually decrease then suddenly increase (spike) above the Fuel Pressure Setpoint?
Yes
- Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- With the scan tool, compare the Fuel Pressure Set point with the Actual Fuel Pressure.
- CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM

Were there any problems with the Fuel Delivery System?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM

- CHECK THE FUEL INJECTOR(S) FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
An injector that sticks open can cause this DTC. A sticking injector will cause the engine to misfire and emit excessive black smoke from the exhaust system.
Does the engine exhibit the symptoms described in the above note?
Yes
- Using the Service Information, remove and inspect the Fuel Injectors for signs of damage or debris that may cause the injector to stick. Sticking injectors may cause the combustion chamber to become black and oil soaked. Replace Injector(s) as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator in accordance with the Service Information.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase the PCM DTCs.
- Attempt to start and test drive the vehicle.
- With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator corrected the Fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM

Were there any problems with the Fuel Delivery System?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 11
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM

- CHECK THE FUEL QUANTITY SOLENOID FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the Fuel Quantity Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase the PCM DTCs.
- Attempt to start and test drive the vehicle.
- With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Replacing the Fuel Quantity Solenoid corrected the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator in accordance with the Service Information.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase the PCM DTCs.
- Attempt to start and test drive the vehicle.
- With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
