Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.NOTE:
If there are any NOx Sensor circuit-related DTCs present, perform the diagnostic for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any Injector, EGR, or Turbocharger DTCs present, perform the diagnostic for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any DEF DTCs present, perform the diagnostic for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
- Start the engine, monitor Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 3 until it reaches 150°C (302°F).
- Drive the vehicle at 50 MPH, ensure that it is not in DPF Regeneration mode.
- Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal).
- Repeat this condition three to five times.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK THE ENGINE FOR A CYLINDER MISFIRE
- Start the engine.
- With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests, and perform the Injector Kill System Test.
Were any cylinders found to be faulty or low?
Yes
- Perform the CHECKING ENGINE MISFIRE / RUNS ROUGH / PERFORMANCE TEST diagnostic procedure. Refer to DRIVEABILITY, DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE AFTER TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the turbocharger outlet and inspect for signs of oil, fuel or moisture being introduced into the after treatment system from the engine.
Was engine oil, fuel or moisture found in the turbocharger exhaust outlet?
Yes
- Locate the cause of possible diesel fuel or engine oil being carried from the engine into the exhaust system. Inspect the SCR Catalyst for possible damage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE DECOMPOSITION TUBE FOR DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID DEPOSITS
- Remove the DEF Injector.
- Visually inspect the Decomposition Tube for signs of diesel exhaust fluid crystals or deposits.
Were any deposits found?
Yes
- Remove the crystallization build up.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE DEF INJECTOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Reconnect the DEF Injector harness connector.
- Place the DEF Injector in a container to capture the fluid sprayed.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, navigate to the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injector Quantity Test.NOTE:
This Test is broken up into three parts: 1-Air bleed/Build Pressure (about 30 seconds/then empty the container), 2-Main volume test (a little over one minute), 3-DEF purge (to remove excess fluid from the lines after the test). The entire procedure will run for 2-3 minutes before timing out. The amount of flow may fluctuate through out the test, therefore the test must be allowed to run completely in order for the results to be accurate. The fluid should spray out as a mist. There should be no dripping from the holes in the DEF Injector at any time during the duration of the test procedure.
- Measure the amount of fluid sprayed after the test times out.
Does the fluid sprayed measure between 26 ml and 35 ml?
Yes
- Replace the NOx Sensor 1/1 in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the DEF Injector in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
