Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Is the DTC Active or Pending?

    Yes 

    • Go To  2

    No 

    NOTE:

    If the DTC does not return the engine oil should still be checked. Refer to step two for guidance, but do not proceed further if no issues are found.

    • Perform the appropriate INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK THE ENGINE OIL 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Check the engine oil for proper level and also look for any contaminates.
    3. Check for an incorrectly installed engine oil filter, deteriorated engine oil due to excessive heat from cylinder blow-by, or engine oil with the wrong viscosity.

      Where there any issues found with the engine oil?

      Yes 

      • Change the engine oil with the specified engine oil type in accordance with the Service Information and service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE EOP SENSOR (G6) PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the component harness connector containing the circuit being tested. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the component harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

    Yes 

    • Go To  4

    No 

  4. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (G924) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the component harness connector containing the circuit being tested. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the component harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

    Yes 

    • Go To  5

    No 

  5. REPLACE THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE (EOP) SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTCS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Replace the component in accordance with the Service Information.
    3. Connect the component and Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connectors.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    6. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
    7. Turn the ignition on.
    8. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    9. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Did the DTC return?

    Yes 

    • Go To  6

    No 

  6. CHECK THE ENGINE FOR MECHANICAL ISSUES 
    1. Inspect the engine for the following issues:
      • Abnormal engine noise, especially in the are of the oil pump. Refer to the Service Information for engine oil pump location.
      • Recent evidence of an injector replacement. If an injector has been replaced incorrectly it may cause the engine oil pickup to become clogged due to excessive heat from cylinder blow-by. If the sealing between injector and cylinder head is not good some blow-by gas may enter under the camshaft cover adding excessive heat to the oil.
      • Oil circuit / bearings issues. Check for metallic debris into the oil filter cartridge and oil drained from the oil sump. Then remove the oil sump in accordance with the Service Information and verify the internal parts of the engine are not worn.
    2. Next, Inspect the engine for the following (UNLIKELY)  issues:
      • Oil draining valve in the filter not working properly. Check the valve for unrestricted flow.
      • Severely diluted oil from fuel due to High pressure fuel pump sealing issue. Dismount the High pressure fuel pump in accordance with the Service Information and verify the sealing. Then check for possible obstruction in the fuel return line from the pump to the tank.

      Where there any mechanical issues found with the engine?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
