End Play - Measurement And Adjustments

CLUTCH B MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE 

NOTE:

The proper selectable shim must be installed to achieve specified clearance.

  1. Remove the torque converter.

    NOTE:

    4WD Only

  2. If the vehicle is 2WD  , proceed to Step 6. If the vehicle is 4WD  proceed to Step 2.
  3. If equipped, remove the transmission housing extension housing bolts and remove the extension housing.

  4. Remove the transmission output shaft seal with a suitable slide hammer and screw.

  5. Remove the output shaft snap ring.
    NOTE:

    2WD shown in illustration, 4WD similar.

  6. Measure the output shaft end play as follows:
    1. Attach a dial indicator and position the plunger against the end of the output shaft.
    2. Zero the dial indicator.
    3. Move the output shaft flange in and out, and record the maximum travel on the dial for assembly reference.

If the end play is not within specification a thinner or thicker selectable shim can be installed to achieve proper end play.

END PLAY SELECTABLE SHIMS 

NOTE:

Check with parts for selectable shim thicknesses and availability.

DISASSEMBLY 

  1. Position the input/output shaft and the P4 annulus drum assembly on (special tool #8925-3, Assembly, Press Fixture) with (special tool #1130, Splitter, Bearing/Gear).
  2. Remove the Clutch B discs and plates.

  3. Remove the O-ring and five squared O-rings from the input shaft.
  4. Remove the P1 annulus/Clutch B hub assembly from the P4 annulus drum.

  5. Remove the selectable shim from the P1 planetary carrier.
  6. Measure the selectable shim and calculate the thickness of the shim to obtain the correct end play.

  1. Install the selectable shim onto the P1 planetary carrier.

  2. Install the backing plate first, bevel down.
  3. Install the Clutch B plates. If equipped with wave springs, install the first friction plate on the backing plate, then install a wave spring (it will lay just outside the diameter of the friction plate), then a steel plate, and repeat until all plates are installed.
  4. Install the Clutch B wave plate.
  5. Install the P1 annulus onto the input/output shaft.
  6. Install the input/output shaft and the P4 annulus drum assembly into the transmission.
