CLUTCH B MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

NOTE:

When the Clutch B is replaced, the proper selectable shim must be installed to achieve specified clearance.

  1. Place the Clutch B, with the wave plate on top, on a suitable arbor press.
  2. Position tools (special tool #8901A, Pressing Tool) (using just the cross bar) and (special tool #10429, Gauge, Force) on top of the Clutch B wave plate and under the press ram.

    2 - Force Gauge
    3 - Compressed Clutch B
  3. Apply 500 N (112 lbf.) of downward force on the Clutch B to compress the wave plate.
  4. Using a suitable micrometer, measure the thickness of the compressed Clutch B. Record the measurement as (A)  to calculate the Clutch B clearance in order to determine the correct selectable shim thickness.

    2 - Transmission Oil Pump
  5. With a suitable depth micrometer, place it at the mounting surface of the transmission oil pump and measure to the base of the Clutch B retainer on the case. This measurement should be 61.05 mm. Record the measurement as (B)  to calculate the Clutch B clearance in order to determine the correct selectable shim thickness.

  6. Using a suitable depth micrometer, measure the Clutch B piston.
  7. Measure between the fluid pump sealing surface and the bottom of the straight edge. Record the measurement as (C)  to calculate the Clutch B clearance in order to determine the correct selectable shim thickness.

Calculation  - Take the case depth (B) subtract (C) subtract (A) remainder is the clearance of the Clutch B. If the clearance is not within specification a thinner or thicker reaction plate can be installed to achieve proper clearance.

NOTE:

If clutch discs are being replaced, soak in 8HP transmission fluid before assembly.

  1. Position the input/output and the P4 annulus drum assembly on (special tool #8925-3, Assembly, Press Fixture) and (special tool #1130, Splitter, Bearing/Gear).

  2. Install the backing plate first, bevel down.
  3. Install the Clutch B plates. If equipped with wave springs, install the first friction plate on the backing plate, then install a wave spring (it will lay just outside the diameter of the friction plate), then a steel plate, and repeat until all plates are installed.
  4. Install the Clutch B wave plate.
  5. Install the P1 annulus onto the input/output shaft.
  6. Install the correct selectable shim onto the P1 annulus.
