Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.
    2. Check for DTCs related to the Exhaust Temperature sensors, Fueling, or MAF.
    3. Check for the following DTCs P0263-00, P0266-00, P0272-00, P0275-00, or P0278-00.

      Are any of the systems or DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR THE AFTERTREATMENT DOC MISSING 
    1. Check the exhaust system to see if the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) has been removed.

      Is the DOC present in the system?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Replace the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 AND EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR CATALYST HARNESS CONNECTORS REVERSED 
    NOTE:

    Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) 2 is located at the DOC inlet and Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Catalyst is located at the DOC outlet (Between the DOC and the DPF).

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the EGT 2 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Using the scan tool, monitor the voltage reading of EGT Sensor 2 and EGT Sensor Catalyst.

      Does the Diesel voltage value change to 5.0 volts for EGT Sensor 2 or EGT Sensor Catalyst?

      EGT Sensor 2 

      • Go To  5

      EGT Sensor Catalyst 

      • The harness connectors are reversed. Switch the (EGT 2 and EGT Catalyst) harness connectors to the correct sensors.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK FOR AN EXHAUST LEAK 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS .

      Are leaks found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE 
    1. Connect all EGT sensors.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Run the engine to normal operating temperature.
    4. With the scan tool, read the Exhaust Temperature Sensors to determine the exhaust temperature.

      Is the temperature reading above 225°F?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Go To  8
  7. COMPARE THE RATIONALITY OF THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSORS 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Raise the engine speed to 2500 RPM for two minutes.

      Does the temperature readings of all three Exhaust Temperature Sensors change in value at least 5°F?

      Yes 

      • Go To  10

      No 

      • Replace the Exhaust Temperature Sensor that did not change in value by at least 5°F or is not updating.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSORS 
    1. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 10 minutes.
    2. With the scan tool, read the values of all three Exhaust Temperature Sensors.

      Do all three temperature sensors read above 150°F and are the values of the temperature sensors updating?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Replace the Exhaust Temperature Sensor that is not above 150°F or is not updating on the scan tool.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  9. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK THE CHARGE AIR COOLING (CAC) SYSTEM FOR CONTAMINATION DAMAGING THE AFTERTREATMENT DOC 
    1. Separate the exhaust plumbing from the Turbocharger outlet.
    2. Inspect for signs of oil, coolant or fuel being introduced into the aftertreatment system from the engine or signs of moisture in the Turbocharger exhaust outlet.

      Is contamination found in the turbocharger exhaust outlet?

      Yes 

      • Identify and repair the source of the contamination within the engine and replace the Aftertreatment Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) after the engine failure has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  11
  11. CHECK THE AFTERTREATMENT DOC FOR FACE PLUGGING OR BLOCKAGE DUE TO EXCESSIVE SOOT BUILD-UP 
    1. Remove the Aftertreatment DOC to inspect for damage or presence of face plugging.

      Are the components found to be missing, plugged or damaged during the inspection of the Aftertreatment DOC?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
