Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any 5-Volt Supply DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (K44) SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Select the appropriate voltage reading.
Voltage is above 5.2 volts
- Go To 4
Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts
- Go To 5
Voltage is below 4.8 volts
- Go To 11
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION (K44) SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Remove the ASD Relay.
- Connect a jumper wire between cavity 30 and cavity 87 of the ASD Relay connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the CMP Position Sensor (K44) Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is the voltage below 1.0 volt?
Yes
- Go To 14
No
- Repair the Camshaft Position Sensor (K44) Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- Measure the voltage of the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Select the appropriate voltage reading.
Voltage is above 5.2 volts
- Repair the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts
- Go To 6
Voltage is below 4.8 volts
- Go To 8
- Measure the voltage of the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (K944) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK FOR A DAMAGED CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OR CAMSHAFT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the CMP Sensor.
- Inspect the CMP Sensor for conditions such as loose mounting screws, damage, or cracks.
- Inspect the Camshaft Tone Wheel for conditions such as damage, debris or cracked teeth.
Is there any evidence of these conditions?
Yes
- Replace the damaged Camshaft Position Sensor or Camshaft Tone Wheel in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- CHECK THE (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Repair the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK FOR THE (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K944) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- Check for continuity between the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (K44) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE CAMSHAFT POSITION (K44) SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 13
- Check for continuity between ground and the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK FOR THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (K44) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K944) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Repair the) CMP Sensor (K44 Signal circuit for a short to the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- Check for continuity between the CMP Sensor (K44) Signal circuit and the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit at the CMP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
