Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any 5-Volt Supply DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE CKP SENSOR (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Crankshaft Position Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the CKP Sensor (K24)Signal circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Select the appropriate voltage reading.
Voltage is above 5.2 volts
- Go To 4
Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts
- Go To 5
Voltage is below 4.8 volts
- Go To 11
- CHECK THE CKP SENSOR (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Remove the ASD Relay.
- Connect a jumper wire between cavity 30 and cavity 87 of the ASD Relay connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (K24) Crankshaft Position Sensor Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- CHECK THE (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- Measure the voltage of the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Select the appropriate voltage reading.
Voltage is above 5.2 volts
- Repair the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
Voltage is between 4.8 and 5.2 volts
- Go To 6
Voltage is below 4.8 volts
- Go To 8
- Measure the voltage of the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (K925) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit between the CKP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (K925) CKP Sensor Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK FOR A DAMAGED CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR OR CRANKSHAFT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the CKP Sensor.
- Inspect the CKP Sensor for conditions such as loose mounting screws, damage, or cracks.
- Inspect the Crankshaft magnetic tone wheel for conditions such as damage, or debris.
Is there any evidence of these conditions?
Yes
- Go To 14
No
- Replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K853) Sensor 5-Volt Supply circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Repair the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK FOR THE (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE CKP (K925) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is there Check for continuity?
Yes
- Repair the (K853) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the CKP Sensor (K925) Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- Check for continuity at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE CKP SENSOR SIGNAL (K24) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit between the PCM C2 harness connector and the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE CKP SENSOR (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 13
- Check for continuity between ground and the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK FOR THE CKP SENSOR (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K925) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit and the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit and the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Go To 14
No
- Repair the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit for a short to the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check for continuity between the CKP Sensor (K24) Signal circuit and the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
