Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any ECT Sensor, EGR, Injector, FRP Sensor, Turbocharger, MAF/Intake Air Sensor, O2 Sensor, or Misfire DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 2
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE AIR FILTER FOR EXCESSIVE AIR FLOW RESTRICTION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove and inspect the Air Filter for soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction
Were any of these problems found?
Yes
- Replace the Air Filter in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE AIR INTAKE SYSTEM AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS FOR FLOW RESTRICTIONS NOTE:
Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.
NOTE:Inspect the exhaust system and related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.
- Inspect the intake system, exhaust system and related tubes and connections.
Were any intake system, exhaust system problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Inspect the intake system, exhaust system and related tubes and connections.
- CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM AND EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Perform the INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION
.
Is there evidence of a leak?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Perform the INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION

- CHECK THE ECT SENSOR FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
For this test to be valid, the thermostat must be operating correctly.
NOTE:This test works best if performed on a cold engine (cold soak)
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, read the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor value. If the engine was allowed to sit overnight (cold soak), the temperature value should be a sensible value that is somewhere close to the ambient temperature.NOTE:
If engine coolant temperature is above 82°C (180°F), allow the engine to cool until 65°C (150°F) is reached.
- Start the Engine.
- During engine warm-up, monitor the ECT Sensor value. The temperature value change should be a smooth transition from start up to normal operating temperature 88°C (190°F).
Did the ECT value increase smoothly and did it reach at least 88°C (190°F)?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the ECT Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. Replace the ECT Sensor if no problems were found with the connectors.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM FOR A LEAK OR RESTRICTION
- Check for visible signs (soot streaks) of external EGR system leaks around the V-band clamps and connections. Ensure that all torques are within specifications.
Were any EGR system leaks found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information to the EGR system.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check for visible signs (soot streaks) of external EGR system leaks around the V-band clamps and connections. Ensure that all torques are within specifications.
- CHECK THE O2 SENSOR CIRCUIT
- Disconnect the O2 Sensor harness connector
- Check the Fused ASD Relay (F343) output circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Check the O2 1/1 (K41) Signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Check the O2 1/1 (K902) Return circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Check the O2 1/1 Positive Current (K89) Control circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Check the O2 1/1 Heater (K79) Control circuit for an open/high resistance.
Are there any issues with the wiring for the O2 Sensor?
Yes
- Repair the wiring issue.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
.
Were any problems found with the fuel system?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
.
- CHECK THE ENGINE FOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check for any of the following conditions/mechanical problems:
- AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM - must be free from leaks.
- ENGINE VALVE TIMING - must be within specifications
- ENGINE COMPRESSION - must be within specifications
- ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM - must be free of any restrictions or leaks.
- ENGINE PCV SYSTEM - must flow freely
- TORQUE CONVERTER STALL SPEED - must be within specifications
- FUEL - must be free of contamination
- FUEL INJECTOR - plugged or restricted injector; control wire not connected to correct injector
Are there any engine mechanical problems?
Yes
- Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
