Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.
      NOTE:

      Check for contaminants that may have damaged an O2 Sensor: contaminated fuel, unapproved silicone, oil and coolant.

      Are there any ECT Sensor, EGR, Injector, FRP Sensor, Turbocharger, MAF/Intake Air Sensor, O2 Sensor, or Misfire DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE AIR FILTER FOR EXCESSIVE AIR FLOW RESTRICTION 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove and inspect the Air Filter for soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction

      Were any of these problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE AIR INTAKE SYSTEM FOR AIR RESTRICTIONS 
    NOTE:

    Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.

    NOTE:

    Inspect the exhaust system and related tubes for damage, restriction or poor connection. Any of these conditions can cause this DTC to set.

    1. Inspect the intake system, exhaust system and related tubes and connections.

      Were any intake system, exhaust system problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS 
    1. Perform the INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION .

      `

      Is there evidence of a leak?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE ECT SENSOR FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    NOTE:

    For this test to be valid, the thermostat must be operating correctly.

    NOTE:

    This test works best if performed on a cold engine (cold soak)

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, read the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor value. If the engine was allowed to sit overnight (cold soak), the temperature value should be a sensible value that is somewhere close to the ambient temperature.
      NOTE:

      If engine coolant temperature is above 82°C (180°F), allow the engine to cool until 65°C (150°F) is reached.

    3. Start the Engine.
    4. During engine warm-up, monitor the ECT Sensor value. The temperature value change should be a smooth transition from start up to normal operating temperature 88°C (190°F).

      Did the ECT value increase smoothly and did it reach at least 88°C (190°F)?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the ECT Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. Replace the ECT Sensor if no problems were found with the connectors.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .

      Were any problems found with the fuel system?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR RESTRICTIONS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the exhaust system for damaged components that could cause exhaust flow blockage.
    3. Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related hoses/tubes and connections for damage, air leaks or blockage.
    4. Inspect the air filter for excessive dirt, soiling or other problems that may cause restricted air flow.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM FOR A LEAK 
    1. Check for visible signs (soot streaks) of external EGR system leaks around the V-band clamps and connections. Ensure that all torques are within specifications.

      Were any EGR system leaks found?

      Yes 

      • Repair as necessary in accordance with the Service Information to the EGR system.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK THE O2 SENSOR FOR EXCESSIVE SOOT BUILDUP 
    NOTE:

    Excessive soot build up can be caused by over fueling. If excessive soot build up is present, the fuel system operation should be checked and the O2 sensor should be cleaned.

    1. Remove the O2 Sensor.
    2. Clean the soot from the O2 Sensor.
    3. Reinstall the O2 Sensor.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    6. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    8. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

  11. CHECK THE ENGINE FOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Check for any of the following conditions/mechanical problems:
      • AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM - must be free from leaks.
      • ENGINE VALVE TIMING - must be within specifications
      • ENGINE COMPRESSION - must be within specifications
      • ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM - must be free of any restrictions or leaks.
      • ENGINE PCV SYSTEM - must flow freely
      • TORQUE CONVERTER STALL SPEED - must be within specifications
      • FUEL - must be free of contamination
      • FUEL INJECTOR - plugged or restricted injector; control wire not connected to correct injector

      Are there any engine mechanical problems?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  12
  12. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
