Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any Air Handling Systems, Cam/Cranks, Fuel Systems, or Misfire detection DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK FOR CAC FOR LEAKS
- Visually inspect the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) and plumbing for cracks, holes, loose clamps, or damage. Inspect the tubes, fins, and welds for tears, breaks, or other damage
Where any faulty conditions found?
Yes
- Perform the applicable repairs.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Visually inspect the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) and plumbing for cracks, holes, loose clamps, or damage. Inspect the tubes, fins, and welds for tears, breaks, or other damage
- INSPECT THE FUEL INJECTOR
- Turn the ignition off.
- Inspect the fuel injector for proper installation in accordance with the Service Information.
- Check the injector hold down for proper torque.
Was the fuel injector properly installed and securely fastened??
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- If the hold down is loose, remove and inspect fuel injector. Replace the fuel injector if it is damaged. Install the fuel injector in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- INSPECT FUEL FOR CONTAMINATION
- Inspect fuel for contamination. Refer to DEF FLUID-DIRT-METAL-OR-OTHER FOREIGN DEBRIS

Was a problem found in the fuel?
Yes
- Perform the applicable repair using the Service Information. After the repair is completed road test the vehicle at speeds of 88 kph (55 mph) or greater for 30 minutes to confirm the repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Inspect fuel for contamination. Refer to DEF FLUID-DIRT-METAL-OR-OTHER FOREIGN DEBRIS

- RESET THE FUEL INJECTOR CALIBRATION
- Using the scan tool perform the Zero Fuel Quantity Calibration for the effected Fuel Injector.
- Using the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Briefly Road test the vehicle at speeds of 88 kph (55 mph) or greater for 30 minutes. During the road test coast-downs must be performed to cycle the injector under varying loads.NOTE:
Coast-downs consist of removing all pressure from the accelerator pedal for 10 to 15 seconds while driving. Coast-down events must be 30-60 seconds apart with normal driving between coast-down events. Accelerate to a steady 55 mph for approximately 30-60 seconds. Repeat for a total of 20-25 times
Does the MIL return during road test?
Yes, there is a new DTC.
- Perform the applicable repair using the Service Information. After the repair is completed road test the vehicle at speeds of 88 kph (55 mph) or greater for ten minutes to confirm the repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No, P020A-00 is still Active or Pending.
- Go To 7
No
- The vehicle has been repaired,
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTOR
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the Fuel injector in accordance with the Service Information.
- Connect all disconnected harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Perform the zero fuel calibration in the scan tool.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Briefly Road test the vehicle at speeds of 88 kph (55 mph) or greater for ten minutes. During the road test coast-downs must be performed to cycle the injector under varying loads.NOTE:

Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Replacing the faulty Fuel Injector repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
