Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any CAN C Bus Communication DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE AAT SENSOR (G31) TEMP SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Disconnect the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor (AAT) harness connector.
- Measure the voltage on the AAT Sensor (G31) Signal circuit at the AAT Sensor harness connector.
Is the voltage above 5.2 volts?
Yes
- Repair the AAT Sensor (G31) Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE AAT SENSOR (G31) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
- Disconnect the DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles). Note: Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
- Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note: The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
- Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the component harness connector.
- Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the ECU harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (G931) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
G931 is used on the "BASE" option and C160 on the "PREMIUM", labeled in wiring as "power" consult wiring diagrams for details.
Measure the resistance of the (G931) Sensor Ground circuit from the AAT Sensor harness connector to the DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles) using the wiring diagram as a guide.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (G931) Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE AAT SENSOR FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Reconnect the DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles).
- Connect a jumper wire between the AAT Sensor (G31) Signal circuit and the (G931) Sensor Ground circuit in the AAT Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
- With a scan tool, read DTCs.NOTE:
The scan tool should display the P0072-AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT LOW DTC as active or pending with the jumper in place.
Does the scan tool display as described above?
Yes
- Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact at the AAT Sensor and DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles). If no pin to terminal contact problems are found, replace the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- CHECK RELATED DDM OR BCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect the DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles).
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect the DDM harness connector (or BCM C4 harness connector in non-DDM vehicles). Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Drivers Door Module (or Body Control Module for non-DDM vehicles) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
