Theory Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

The Turbo Actuator is mounted to the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) communicates with the actuator on a Private CAN BUS and controls the actuator. The boost pressure is changed by varying the position of the vanes within the Turbocharger. The Turbocharger Boost Pressure Actuator reports faults to the PCM on private CAN.

The VGT Actuator has a position sensor that is integrated into the housing of the actuator case. The turbocharger boost control circuit is controlled by an application specific power stage IC (ASIC) with an internal low side PWM control circuit. The ASIC performs the circuit diagnosis and communicates circuit faults to the microcontroller via a Micro Second Channel (MSC) interface bus. This position sensor supplies feedback on commanded changes.
