Theory Of Operation
The Turbo Actuator is mounted to the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls boost pressure by changing the position of the variable vanes within the Turbocharger. The PCM uses the VGT Actuator and a pushrod to make these changes.
The VGT Actuator is controlled and monitored by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM controls the VGT Actuator using an H-bridge that periodically reverses (or removes) the current and polarity of two control circuits connected to a DC motor. The PCM utilizes Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) voltage to monitor and control the varying loads on the actuator during operation. This helps prevent overheating of the DC motor.
The VGT Actuator has a position sensor that is integrated into the housing of the actuator case. This position sensor functions as a typical three wire 5-Volt sensor. The PCM receives feedback from the position sensor signal wire.
