Theory Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

The crankshaft and camshaft positions of the engine are used in parallel to calculate the engine synchronization states and to control the necessary interrupts including gas exchange and fuel injection. The crankshaft and camshaft positions are calculated based on the readings of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors.

The camshaft position sensor is located next to the camshaft, the crankshaft position sensor next to the crankshaft. The sensors are checked for circuit failures during operation. They are also checked for range of position which could change in the case where a tensioner or chain fails. The crankshaft sensor is assumed to be working properly in this case as long as there are no Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) faults present. If you have this fault and no other codes set on the 3.0L diesel the Camshaft Position Sensor, related wiring and mechanical failures are the likely causes.
