Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR (WSS) CIRCUIT RELATED DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any WSS circuit related DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR (WSS) SIGNALS
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, monitor and graph ALL the WSS speeds and compare graph while an assistant drives the vehicle.NOTE:
If graph shows periodic dropouts pay close attention to the tone wheel.
- Slowly accelerate as straight as possible from a stop to 40 km/h (25 mph).
Is the Right Front WSS speed showing 0 km/h (0 mph), not matching other wheels, or showing erratic behavior?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Perform the ABS-INTERMITTENT CONDITION TEST. Refer to ABS INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK FOR IMPROPER RIGHT FRONT TIRE PRESSURE/MISMATCHED TIRES
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check and adjust the Right Front Tire pressure.
- Check and adjust all other tire pressures.
- Inspect for mismatched tires on vehicle.
Is the Right Front Tire improperly inflated or mismatched tires on vehicle?
Yes
- Repair as necessary
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE RIGHT FRONT WSS FOR LOOSENESS/DEBRIS, INSPECT CIRCUITS/CONNECTORS/TERMINALS FOR DAMAGE NOTE:
Check all terminals for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check the Right Front WSS for looseness/debris, excessive corrosion and not properly fastened.
- Inspect the ABS Module harness connector and the Right Front WSS harness connector.
- Inspect the (B6) Right Front WSS (-) and (B7) Right Front WSS (+) circuits between the Right Front WSS and ABS for damage.
Was the Right Front WSS loose/debris or any of the wiring/connectors/terminals damaged?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE RIGHT FRONT ENCODER/WHEEL BEARING FOR DEBRIS
- Inspect the Right Front Encoder/Wheel Bearing for debris.
Was there debris on the Encoder/Wheel Bearing?
Yes
- Clean the Encoder/Wheel Bearing.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Inspect the Right Front Encoder/Wheel Bearing for debris.
- CHECK RIGHT FRONT ENCODER/WHEEL BEARING OR HUB FOR DAMAGE
- Check the Right Front Encoder/Wheel Bearing or Hub for excessive runout, clearance or damage.NOTE:
Refer to the appropriate service information, if necessary, for procedures or specifications.
Is the Right Front Encoder/Wheel Bearing or Hub Damaged?
Yes
- Replace the Wheel Bearing/Hub in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Check the Right Front Encoder/Wheel Bearing or Hub for excessive runout, clearance or damage.
- REPLACE THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR (WSS) AND TEST FOR DTCS
- Replace the Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, WHEEL SPEED, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST
.WARNING:
To avoid personal injury or death, check brake capability is available before road testing.
- Road test the vehicle over 40 km/h (25 mph).NOTE:
Vehicle must be driven for several minutes above 40 km/h (25 mph) for set conditions to be meet.
- With the scan tool, read ABS DTCs.
Does the DTC remain active?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Test complete.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the ABS harness connector.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect the ABS harness connector. Be certain that the harness connector is fully seated and the connector lock is fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect the related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.WARNING:
To avoid possible serious or fatal injury, check brake capability is available before road testing.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read ABS DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
