Diagnosis And Testing - Automatic Transmission - General Conditions
Before attempting any repair on an automatic transmission, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) with the appropriate scan tool.
A unique transmission fluid has been developed for this transmission. This fluid is NOT compatible with ATF+4 or any other current FCA US LLC transmission fluid. For specifics about this unique fluid see CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
ZF transmissions are filled from the factory with UV leak detection dye. Do NOT add leak detection dye to the transmission.
Transmission malfunctions may be caused by these general conditions:
- Poor engine performance.
- Hydraulic malfunctions.
- Mechanical malfunctions.
- Electronic malfunctions.
- Transfer case performance (if equipped).
Diagnosis of these problems should always begin by checking the easily accessible variables: transmission fluid level, transmission fluid condition, and transmission DTCs using the appropriate diagnostic scan tool. Then perform a road test to determine if the problem has been corrected or if more diagnosis is necessary.
