Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    This DTC must be active for the results of this test to be valid.

    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. With the scan tool, read ABS DTCs and record on the repair order.
    4. With the scan tool, read and record Environmental Data to help identify the conditions in which the DTC was set.
    5. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    6. Start the engine.
    7. Press the brake pedal firmly and release.
    8. With the scan tool, read ABS DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) DTCs 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs in the BCM.

      Are there any BCM Stop Lamp Switch related DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. STOP LAMP SWITCH OPERATION 
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Using the scan tool, monitor the brake pedal switch status while pressing the brake pedal and releasing.

      Is the Stop Lamp Switch operating correctly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Go To  5
  4. BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE 
    1. Using the scan tool, monitor the brake pedal pressure and the status of the brake pedal switch while slowly pressing the brake pedal.

      Was there Brake Pressure before the Brake Pedal Switch status changed?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  10
  5. (B134) BRAKE SIGNAL 2 CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector.
    3. Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, check the (B134) Brake Signal 2 circuit at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector while pressing and releasing the brake pedal several times.

      Does the test light change from illuminated to not illuminated as the brake pedal is pressed and released?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Go To  7
  6. (B135) BRAKE SIGNAL 1 CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit at the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector while pressing and releasing the brake pedal several times.

      Does the test light change from illuminated to not illuminated as the brake pedal is pressed and released?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. (B135) BRAKE SIGNAL 1 CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the BCM C4 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit between the Stop Lamp Switch harness connector and the BCM C4 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Repair the (B135) Brake Signal 1 circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. STOP LAMP SWITCH 
    1. Using the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAM/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Stop Lamp Switch and the Body Control Module (BCM).
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    4. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
    5. Replace the Stop Lamp Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, STOP LAMP, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs in the ABS Module.

      Does the DTC remain active?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

  9. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all BCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all BCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  10. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect the ABS Module harness connector.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect the ABS Module harness connector. Be certain that the harness connector is fully seated and the connector lock is fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect the related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
      WARNING:

      To avoid possible serious or fatal injury, check brake capability is available before road testing.

    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read ABS Module DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
