Engine And 948TE Transmission Separation

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the PTU wire harness connector (1).

2. Remove the wiring duct bolt (1) from the PTU mounting bracket.

3. Remove the protective cover (1) from the starter B+ wire harness connection.

4. Remove the nut (1) and remove the B+ electrical connection from the starter motor.

5. Open the clips (1a) and release the starter motor wiring (1b).

6. Open the clips (1a) and release the PTU breather hose (1b).

7. Remove the bolts (1a) and the wiring mounting bracket (1b).

8. Disconnect the auxiliary water pump wire harness connector (1).
9. Remove the auxiliary water pump retaining collar bolt (2) and reposition the pump.

10. Remove the bolts (1a) and (1b) from the PTU mounting bracket (1c) and remove the bracket.

11. Remove the PTU to transmission bolts (1).

12. Remove the PTU (1) from the transmission, including the O-ring seal.

13. Remove the O-ring seal (1) from the PTU.

14. Disconnect the starter motor wire harness connector (1).
15. Remove the lower starter motor bolt (2).

16. Remove the upper starter motor bolt (1) and remove the starter motor.

17. Remove the lower transmission bolts (1a) and remove the dust shield (1b).

    CAUTION:

    Do not rotate the crankshaft using the damper bolt. The bolt has left-hand threads and can be inadvertently loosened resulting in loss of camshaft timing. Only rotate the damper itself in a clockwise direction (as viewed from the front).

18. Remove the six torque converter bolts (1).

19. Install appropriate lifting brackets on the transmission and connect a suitable hydraulic hoist.

20. Remove the PTU side transmission bolt (1).

21. Remove the catalytic converter side transmission bolt.

22. Remove the top transmission bolts (1a) and separate the transmission (1b) from the engine.

INSTALLATION

1. Refit the transmission and tighten the PTU side transmission bolt (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

2. Install the catalytic converter side transmission bolt and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

3. Install the top transmission bolts and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
4. Disconnect and remove the hydraulic hoist and lifting brackets.
CAUTION:

5. Install and tighten the six torque converter bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

6. Install the dust shield (1a) and tighten the lower transmission bolts (1b) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
7. Install the starter motor and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
8. Connect the starter motor wire harness connector.
9. Install the PTU complete with a NEW  O-ring seal and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
10. Install the PTU support bracket and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
11. Position the auxiliary water pump in the mounting bracket and securely tighten the bolt.
12. Connect the auxiliary water pump wire harness connector.
13. Install the wiring mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
14. Engage the PTU breather hose in the retaining clips.
15. Engage the starter motor wiring in the retaining clips.
16. Install the B+ electrical connection to the starter motor, securely tighten the nut and close the protective cover.
17. Refit the wiring duct on the PTU mounting bracket and securely tighten the bolt.
18. Connect the PTU wire harness connector.
