Engine And 948TE Transmission Separation

REMOVAL
- Disconnect the PTU wire harness connector (1).
- Remove the wiring duct bolt (1) from the PTU mounting bracket.
- Remove the protective cover (1) from the starter B+ wire harness connection.
- Remove the nut (1) and remove the B+ electrical connection from the starter motor.
- Open the clips (1a) and release the starter motor wiring (1b).
- Open the clips (1a) and release the PTU breather hose (1b).
- Remove the bolts (1a) and the wiring mounting bracket (1b).
- Disconnect the auxiliary water pump wire harness connector (1).
- Remove the auxiliary water pump retaining collar bolt (2) and reposition the pump.
- Remove the bolts (1a) and (1b) from the PTU mounting bracket (1c) and remove the bracket.
- Remove the PTU to transmission bolts (1).
- Remove the PTU (1) from the transmission, including the O-ring seal.
- Remove the O-ring seal (1) from the PTU.
- Disconnect the starter motor wire harness connector (1).
- Remove the lower starter motor bolt (2).
- Remove the upper starter motor bolt (1) and remove the starter motor.
- Remove the lower transmission bolts (1a) and remove the dust shield (1b).CAUTION:
Do not rotate the crankshaft using the damper bolt. The bolt has left-hand threads and can be inadvertently loosened resulting in loss of camshaft timing. Only rotate the damper itself in a clockwise direction (as viewed from the front).
- Remove the six torque converter bolts (1).
- Install appropriate lifting brackets on the transmission and connect a suitable hydraulic hoist.
- Remove the PTU side transmission bolt (1).
- Remove the catalytic converter side transmission bolt.
- Remove the top transmission bolts (1a) and separate the transmission (1b) from the engine.
INSTALLATION
- Refit the transmission and tighten the PTU side transmission bolt (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the catalytic converter side transmission bolt and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.
- Install the top transmission bolts and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Disconnect and remove the hydraulic hoist and lifting brackets.
- Install and tighten the six torque converter bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

- Install the dust shield (1a) and tighten the lower transmission bolts (1b) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the starter motor and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the starter motor wire harness connector.
- Install the PTU complete with a NEW O-ring seal and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the PTU support bracket and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Position the auxiliary water pump in the mounting bracket and securely tighten the bolt.
- Connect the auxiliary water pump wire harness connector.
- Install the wiring mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Engage the PTU breather hose in the retaining clips.
- Engage the starter motor wiring in the retaining clips.
- Install the B+ electrical connection to the starter motor, securely tighten the nut and close the protective cover.
- Refit the wiring duct on the PTU mounting bracket and securely tighten the bolt.
- Connect the PTU wire harness connector.
CAUTION:
