Clutch A - Disassembly And Adjustments
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CLUTCH A MEASUREMENT:
- Using (special tool #10428, Adapter, Pressing Tool) (1) and (special tool #10429, Gauge, Force) (2), Place the A-clutch/oil pump assembly in a suitable arbor press.
- Apply 200 N (45 lbs.) of force to the A-clutch backing plate to compress the wave plate.
- With a suitable feeler gauge (2) measure the gap between the A-clutch backing plate and the snap ring.
- Refer to the clutch clearance table for specs. If clearance is not within specification, a thinner or thicker selectable snap ring can be installed for proper clearance. Refer to CLUTCH SPECIFICATIONS .

DISASSEMBLY
NOTE:
The A-Clutch, dependent on transmission Julian Date, may contain wave springs that sit around each fiber. there will be five fibers (3), five wave springs (4), five steels (5), one cover plate (2), one snap ring (1), and one wave plate (6).
- Remove the oil pump from the transmission case. Refer to
PUMP, TRANSMISSION OIL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the B- Piston cushion spring (1).
- With one hand above B-Piston (1), carefully apply air pressure into the hole directly above the B-Piston alignment tab to remove B-Piston (1) from the assembly.
- Remove the snap ring (1).
- Remove the clutches and spacers (2).
- Remove the hub (1).
- Position the oil pump housing assembly (3) in a suitable press (2).
- Using (special tool #8285, Compressor, Spring) (1) press on the fingers of the piston retainer to remove tension on the split retaining ring.
- Remove the two halves of the retaining ring (1).
- Remove the belleville spring (1).
- Remove the A- Piston (1) from the housing.
- Remove and DISCARD the A- Piston seals (1, 2).
ASSEMBLY
NOTE:
If the clutch discs are being replaced, soak in 8HP transmission fluid before assembly.
- Insert the piston into the housing with NEW
piston seals (1, 2). Lubricate the seals with transmission assembly lube prior to installing them into the housing.
- Insert the belleville spring (1).
- Position the oil pump housing assembly (3) in a suitable arbor press (2).
- Using (special tool #8285, Compressor, Spring) (1), press on the fingers of the piston retaining ring to remove tension.
- Install the two retaining ring halves (1).
- Install the hub (1).
- Install the clutches and wave springs (2).
- Install the snap ring (1).
- Install a NEW
B-Piston seal (1).
- Install the B-Piston (1) on the assembly.
