Transfer Case - MPT3028C (Two Speed)
DESCRIPTION
The MPT3028C is an electronically controlled full-time transfer case with multiple operating ranges. This is an electronically controlled active full-time transfer case. A wet clutch in the transfer case is used to control torque transfer to the front and rear axles.
The following are the operating ranges of the MPT3028C transfer case:
4WD Auto:
- The 4WD Auto mode can be used at any time and on any road surface.
- Provides convenient full-time all-wheel-drive with no driver intervention needed. The all-wheel drive system has the capability of transferring variable amounts of the available torque to the front wheels as required depending on vehicle driving conditions.
- Has the capability of transferring variable amounts of the available torque to the front wheels as required depending on vehicle driving conditions.
N (NEUTRAL):
- Allows the vehicle to be flat towed with all four wheels on the ground.
4WD LOW:
- Provides a 2.73:1 reduction ratio for increased low speed torque capability.
OPERATION
Operating ranges are selected with a dash mounted shift selector switch. A separate switch is used to place the transfer case into Neutral. The shift selector switch provides an input to the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) to indicate the operating range selection. The DTCM uses this input, along with the input from the transfer case mounted mode sensor and information from the vehicle's CAN C bus, to determine if a shift is permitted. If the DTCM decides the shift is permitted, the DTCM controls the shift motor mounted on the transfer case to perform the shift.
The input shaft is splined to the transmission output shaft. The front output shaft is operated by a drive chain that connects the shaft to a drive sprocket on the main shaft. Depending on traction conditions, the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) will modulate the electromagnetic clutch assembly to vary the amount of torque applied to the front axle. Torque is transmitted through the input shaft to the clutch and drive sprocket assembly, and is transferred directly to the rear driveshaft, and to the output shaft and front driveshaft by the drive chain. The oil pump circulates gear lube throughout the case to provide clutch cooling
Proper operation of all-wheel drive vehicles depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel. Any difference in tire size can cause damage to the transfer case.
