Standard Starting: Notes
DESCRIPTION
The standard starting system can consist of the following components:

The Keyless Go system replaces the conventional key and ignition switch with a momentary press button and a wireless electronic key fob. When the operator presses the Go button, the key fob is interrogated wirelessly. If the key fob is recognized as belonging to the vehicle and in the vehicle interior, the system allows the ignition state of the vehicle to be manipulated by the operator between OFF, ACCESSORY (ACC), RUN, and START ignition states.
OPERATION
Base Starting System:
The starter is always operated by a single relay positioned in the PDC and activated by the PCM. The activation signal reaches the BCM, which will activate an internal relay of its own, which sends a signal to the relay located in the PDC and activated by the PCM. When the PCM activates the relay, a 12 volt feed arrives at the starter solenoid, which will activate the starter.
A starting system equipped with an RF-Hub will exhibit the following operating conditions:
- Pressing the KIN, a request is sent to the RFH via a private Local Interface Network (LIN) bus for authentication.
- The RFH receives the request from the KIN and then looks for the valid key fob by using the LF antennas.
- If the RFH detects a valid key fob and the brake is engaged, the RFH sends a Controller Area Network (CAN) request to the BCM to change the ignition position to START/CRANK.
- Then the BCM sends the command to the PCM to turn the vehicle to CRANK.
- If conditions are correct to start, the PCM turns on the high side of the PCM starter relay and turns the Crank Hold Signal to True. If the BCM is still in crank and the Crank Hold is true, then the BCM turns on the low side of the BCM Starter relay and the engine will start cranking.
- Once the engine is started the PCM deactivates the double start over ride.
- The BCM will then deactivate the starter either when the engine starts or the maximum time of 10 seconds has been reached for the tip start.
- The RFH changes the ignition position to RUN if the start type is TIP start or the five second time expires or the engine controller indicates the vehicle is not in Park or Neutral .
- The engine can be manually shut down by the driver with speeds over 8 kilometer per hour (km/h) 5 miles per hour (mph) in any gear.
Transponder backup mode starting:
There is a LF coil located in the KIN that can communicate with the key fobs transponder in close range if the fob battery is dead and complete the authentication. In the event of a key fob issue (1), push the front edge of the key fob against the start button and hold it there for a few seconds to start the vehicle.
