Lamps/Lighting - Exterior (Service Information): Description
The exterior lighting system for this vehicle includes the following exterior lamp units:
- Center High Mounted Stop Lamp - A standard equipment Light Emitting Diode (LED) Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) is centered on the liftgate spoiler just above the flip-up glass opening at the rear of the vehicle.
- Daytime Running Lamps - The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) are located in the combination Park/Turn lamp assembly. The DRLs on this vehicle are Light Emitting Diode (LED). If allowed by law in the country in which the vehicle was purchased the DRLs can be turned on and off using the Uconnect® System
- Front Fog Lamps - Vehicles equipped with this option have a separate fog lamp unit mounted near each outboard end of the front fascia, below each front lamp unit.
- Front Lamp Units - A LED front lamp unit is standard equipment on vehicles manufactured for domestic markets. The front lamp units are mounted to the front fascia on either side of the mid grille opening.
- License Plate Lamps - Two standard equipment LED rear license plate lamp units are mounted to the underside of the light bar and handle unit, just above the license plate tub formation on the outer liftgate panel.
- Outside Mirror Signal Lamps - Vehicles equipped with this option have a LED signal lamp unit integral to the lower forward facing surface of each outside rear view mirror.
- Rear Lamp Unit - Full 48 element LED illumination on either side of the vehicle and 24 LED elements are position on either side of the tailgate-to-rear aperture split line. The rear lamp unit combines a three-shot lens that integrates clear, red, and black surround surfacing. Direction signals and braking lamps illuminate on the outside array of the lamp, running lamps illuminate on the full array inside and outside. The backup lamp is included in this lamp and is a halogen bulb.
These exterior lighting lamp units and their controls are combined to provide the following exterior lighting features:
- Adaptive Front Lighting System - This vehicle can be equipped with an Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS) with an Adaptive Front Lighting Module (AFLM). The AFLS system is composed of a master module, the AFLM, connected to the right headlight unit that communicates on the Controller Area Network-Chassis (CAN-C) network. The system also incorporates a slave Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for the left headlight. The AFLM communicates with the left headlight ECU over the Local Interface Network (LIN). The AFLM and the left headlights ECU move two stepper motors, one for orientating the headlight horizontally and the other for leveling the headlight. This system is enable by default but can be disabled in the customer programmable menu options located in the radio.
- Automatic Headlights - Automatic headlights are optional equipment on this vehicle except those that are manufactured for the Canadian market. The Canadian market vehicle receives auto headlights as standard equipment. The headlight switch includes an (A ) automatic position and an automatic headlight sensor senses ambient light levels. The automatic headlight sensor is integral to the sun load sensor located on the top of the instrument panel. When the (A ) automatic position of the headlight switch is selected, the headlights are turned ON and OFF automatically as ambient light levels dictate.
- Automatic High Beam Control
- Vehicles equipped with the optional automatic high beam control system include a unique digital light-sensing imager camera inside the vehicle on the windshield next to the rear view mirror. The conditions that need to be met for Automatic High Beam Control (AHBC) are:
- The headlight switch needs to be set to AUTO.
- Customer preference in the radio options needs to be enabled.
- The stalk moved to the back/high beam position.
- Appropriate light conditions.
- Backup Lamps - In domestic market vehicles, the backup (or reverse) lamps include a clear halogen bulb, reflector and clear lens that are integral to each inner and outer rear lamp unit. In export market vehicles, backup lamps are found in only the two inner rear lamp units.
- Brake Lamps - The brake (or stop) lamps are LED and are integral to each outer rear lamp unit, and the red lens and multiple LED units of the CHMSL. On vehicles equipped with combined rear lighting, the turn signal and stop lamp use the same LED elements. When combined rear lighting is present, turn signals are allowed to interrupt stop lamp actuation to allow turn signal actuation.
- Daytime Running Lamps - Domestic market vehicles with LED front lamp units and DRL illuminate a dedicated DRL LED array in the combination park/turn lamp unit, while export market vehicles illuminate a combination DRL/position lamp LED array in each front lamp unit.
- Exterior Lamp Fail-Safe Operation - The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and the Body Control Module (BCM) provide a fail-safe feature which will automatically turn ON the low beam headlights and all park lamps when the ignition switch is in the ON position and there is no detected input from the headlight switch, or when there is no communication over the CAN data bus.
- Exterior Lamp Load Shedding - The BCM provides a battery saver feature which will automatically turn OFF all exterior lamps that remain ON with the ignition is in the LOCK position after a timed interval of about eight minutes.
- Front Fog Lamps - The optional front fog lamps include the LED, reflector and lens of each adjustable front fog lamp unit.
- Hazard Warning Lamps - The hazard warning lamps include the LEDs, reflectors and lenses of each lamp in the right and left, front and rear turn signal circuits.
- Headlight Delay - The low or high beam headlights remain illuminated for 90 seconds after the ignition position has been turned to the OFF position. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), the delay interval is customer-programmable for 0, 30, 60 or 90 seconds.
- Headlights and Leveling - LED AFLS headlights are standard equipment on this vehicle. The right headlight includes the AFLM while the passenger side headlight includes the slaved ECU. Both of these components allow for AFLS to provide dynamic bending light and automatic vertical aim control based on inputs from front and rear axle sensors to monitor changes in the vehicle suspension height. None of the LEDs in this lamp are serviceable.
- Optical Horn - Also known as flash-to-pass, the beam selection function of the multi-function switch control stalk has a momentary intermediate position that allows the headlight high beams to be flashed momentarily, without changing the headlight beam selection.
- Park Lamps - The front LED park lamps are included within the headlight unit.
- Turn Signal Lamps - The front LED turn signal lamps include an amber bulb, a reflector, and a clear lens that are integral to each front headlight. On vehicles equipped with the optional outside mirror signal lamps, there are several amber LED units integral to each mirror signal lamp unit that are also activated by the turn signal circuits for the same side of the vehicle.
Other components of the exterior lighting system for this vehicle include:
- Backup Lamp Switch - A Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) integral to the solenoid pack on the valve body of the electronic automatic transmission performs the backup lamp switch function for this vehicle.
- Body Control Module - The BCM is located beneath the instrument panel on the driver side of the vehicle. Refer to MODULE, BODY CONTROL (BCM), DESCRIPTION .
- Brake Lamp Switch - A plunger-type brake lamp switch is located on the steering column support bracket under the instrument panel and is actuated by the brake pedal arm when the brake pedal is depressed.
- Hazard Switch - The hazard switch is a latching push button-actuated switch. On vehicles equipped with Automatic Temperature Control (ATC), the hazard warning flasher switch is located in the switch pod below the radio screen. On vehicles equipped with Manual Temperature Control (MTC), the hazard warning flasher switch is located in the Integrated Center Stack (ICS).
- Headlight Switch - A headlight switch is located on the left side of the instrument panel, below the left instrument panel vent outboard of the steering column. The headlight switch includes a rotary knob to turn the park lamps and headlights ON or OFF and is pushed inward for selecting the optional front fog lamps on vehicles so equipped. The headlight switch also features a vertical thumbwheel for selecting the panel lamps dimming level, a PARADE mode, and for interior lighting control.
- Instrument Panel Cluster - The IPC is located in the instrument panel above the steering column opening, directly in front of the driver. Refer to DESCRIPTION .
- Multifunction Switch - The multifunction switch is integral to the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) located on the steering column, just below the steering wheel. A control stalk that extends from the left side of the SCCM is used to select the turn signal lamps (right or left) and to select the headlight beam (low, high or optical horn).
- Park Brake Switch - A park brake switch is located on the park brake lever mechanism on the cowl side inner panel (Left-Hand Drive/LHD) or the right side of the floor panel transmission tunnel (Right-Hand Drive/RHD) to the left of the steering column.
- Steering Column Control Module - The SCCM is located on the top of the steering column, just below the steering wheel. Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), DESCRIPTION .
- Trailer Tow Wiring - Domestic market vehicles with a factory-installed trailer towing package have a trailer tow wire harness with a combination 4-way and heavy duty 7-way trailer tow connector installed in the rear bumper fascia near the trailer hitch receiver. This package also includes an electric trailer brake wiring provision that terminates at a connector located on top of the large body harness connection bracket under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column. An electric trailer brake pigtail harness and an instruction card are available to ease installation of most aftermarket electric trailer brake controllers.
- Trailer Tow Relays - Domestic market vehicles with a factory-installed trailer towing package have two trailer tow relays installed in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment. One relay is for the trailer right turn and brake lamps, and the other is for the trailer left turn and brake lamps.
