Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any other Starter Relay Control circuit DTCs active or pending in the PCM or Body Control Module (BCM)?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. ATTEMPT TO CRANK THE ENGINE 
    1. Attempt to crank the engine with the ignition start.

      Does the engine crank?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE BATTERY SUPPLY TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    1. Remove Starter Relay from the PDC.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Measure the voltage on the Starter Relay voltage supply (terminal 30) at the Starter Relay socket in the PDC.

      Is the voltage equal to Battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE IGNITION RUN 2 OUTPUT FROM THE BCM 
    1. Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
    2. Measure the voltage of the (F30) Fused Ignition at the PDC C3 harness connector with the Ignition on.

      Is the voltage equal to Battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Starter Relay and retest. If the DTC returns, replace the PDC in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE (F30) FUSED IGNITION CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Disconnect the BCM C3 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (F30) Fused Ignition circuit between the PDC C3 harness connector and the BCM C3 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3 ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Repair the (F30) Fused Ignition circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK RELATED BCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all BCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all BCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE (T753) IGNITION CRANK SENSE CIRCUIT VOLTAGE AT THE PCM 
    1. Reinstall Starter Relay in the PDC.
      CAUTION:

      Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    2. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM connector.
    3. Attempt an ignition start of the engine.
    4. Measure the voltage on the (T753) Ignition Crank Sense Feed circuit at the GPEC adapter while attempting to crank the engine.

      Is the voltage equal to Battery voltage during cranking?

      Yes 

      • Go To  12

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK THE (T753/T750) IGNITION CRANK SENSE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    3. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the (T753/T750) Ignition Crank Sense circuit between the Starter Relay socket terminal and the GPEC adapter.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

  10. CHECK THE (T753) IGNITION CRANK SENSE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    3. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the (T753) Ignition Crank Sense circuit between the -
      • GPEC Adapter and the (T750) Starter Relay Output at the PDC C3 harness connector.
      • GPEC Adapter and the (T750) Starter Relay Output at the Starter.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for both legs of the circuit?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

      • Repair the Ignition Crank (T753) Sense circuit for an open or high resistance or short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  11. CHECK THE PDC CONNECTOR FOR SIGNS OF DAMAGED TERMINALS OR CONNECTION 
    1. Check the terminals and wiring at the PDC for pushed out, broken or damaged terminals.

      Were any issues found with the PDC or wiring?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repair in accordance with the Service Information. Check all of the fuses for an open. If a fuse is open, replace the fuse and retest.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  12
  12. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
