Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR ANY SERVICE BULLETINS OR PCM SOFTWARE UPDATES
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
Are there any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates?
Yes
- Perform the applicable repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 2
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE AIR FILTER
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove and inspect the Air Filter and housing inlet for snow, soiling or excessive dirt and debris which may cause air flow restriction.
Were any of these problems found?
Yes
- Replace the Air Filter or remove the obstruction.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE WASTEGATE VALVE AND LINKAGE FOR BINDING NOTE:
Do not pull on the actuator rod, use any tools to move the actuator or remove the retaining clips on the pivot arms during this check.
- Inspect the Wastegate Actuator, linkage and the Wastegate Valve for proper operation. Move the linkage by hand to check for any sticking or binding during travel.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Inspect the Wastegate Actuator, linkage and the Wastegate Valve for proper operation. Move the linkage by hand to check for any sticking or binding during travel.
- CHECK FOR EXHAUST SYSTEM RESTRICTIONS
- Inspect the complete exhaust system for damaged, bent or clogged pipes that can cause exhaust system restrictions and excessive back pressure.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Inspect the complete exhaust system for damaged, bent or clogged pipes that can cause exhaust system restrictions and excessive back pressure.
- CHECK FOR THE TURBOCHARGER SURGE VALVE LEAKING OR STICKING OPEN
- Turn the ignition off.
- Pinch the hose between the Surge Valve and the Turbocharger to block air flow.
- Test drive the vehicle in a boost condition and check for proper boost operation.NOTE:
Avoid any sudden decelerations during test drive since the Surge Valve will not be able to purge any excess pressure trapped between the Turbocharger and Throttle Body. This cold cause damage to the Turbocharger, Surge Valve or hose.
Does the engine have proper boost with the Surge Valve hose pinched closed?
Yes
- Repair or replace the Surge Valve in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- CHECK FOR INTAKE SYSTEM LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS NOTE:
Damaged, restricted or poorly connected Intake System and Turbocharger System related tubes can cause this DTC to set.
WARNING:The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Never work around or attempt to service any part of the exhaust system until it has cooled. Special care should be taken when working near the catalytic converter. The temperature of the converter rises to a high level after a short period of engine operating time.
- Connect Exhaust Cone (special tool #8404-ECT, Exhaust Cone, Truck) to Air Pressure Regulator (with hose) W-18-MIL-1146AS.CAUTION:
The air pressure must not exceed 27.6 kPa (4 psi), otherwise engine damage can occur.
- Attach shop air to the air pressure regulator.
- Adjust the Air Pressure Regulator to 27.6 kPa (4 psi).
- Insert the exhaust cone into the turbo inlet pipe.
- Apply Mopar® Air Leak Detector PN 05191804AA (or an equivalent leak finder liquid) to the following areas:
- All air intake, crankcase vent and Turbocharger related hoses/tubes and clamps
- Boost pressure system hoses
- Intercooler Assembly
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair or replace as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Connect Exhaust Cone (special tool #8404-ECT, Exhaust Cone, Truck) to Air Pressure Regulator (with hose) W-18-MIL-1146AS.
- CHECK THE WASTEGATE SOLENOID CONNECTOR AND TERMINALS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check the Wastegate Solenoid harness connector for proper connection at the Wastegate Solenoid.
- Verify that the connector is completely plugged in and properly locked prior to disconnecting.
- Disconnect the Wastegate Solenoid harness connector and check for any pushed out, damaged or spread terminals.
Were any issues found with the connector or terminals?
Yes
- Repair the damaged terminal or properly connect and lock the Wastegate Solenoid harness connector and retest for DTCs.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- ISOLATE AND LOAD TEST THE WASTEGATE SOLENOID (K138) CONTROL (+) CIRCUIT TO CHECK FOR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES .
CAUTION:Do not load test any circuits with components still connected to the circuit.
- Disconnect the PCM harness connector.
- Connect the
(special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)
to the appropriate PCM connector.
NOTE:IMPORTANT - The GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor can add up to 1.5 Ohms of resistance to the circuit.
- Load test the Wastegate Solenoid (K138) Control (+) circuit. Note:
refer to the example illustration.NOTE:
The bulb on the load test tool should be illuminated and bright if there is no resistance in the circuit. Compare the brightness of the bulb in the load test tool to that of a direct connection across Battery.
Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Repair the Wastegate Solenoid (K138) Control (+) circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- ISOLATE AND LOAD TEST THE WASTEGATE SOLENOID (K138) CONTROL (+) CIRCUIT TO CHECK FOR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES .
CAUTION:Do not load test any circuits with components still connected to the circuit.
- Disconnect the PCM harness connector.
- Connect the
(special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)

Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Repair or replace the Turbocharger Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the Wastegate Solenoid (K139) Control (-) circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
