Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR ANY SERVICE BULLETINS OR PCM SOFTWARE UPDATES
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
Are there any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates?
Yes
- Perform the applicable repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 2
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM FOR A SIGNS OF A LEAK NOTE:
Do not run the engine when inspecting the high pressure fuel system for leaks. The system pressure can be extremely high.
- Visually inspect for signs of fuel leaks at the high pressure fuel tube and Fuel Injectors.
Are any leaks present?
Yes
- If the leak appears to be at the high pressure fuel tube, verify that the tube is torqued correctly. If the torque is correct, replace the high pressure fuel tube in accordance with the Service Information. If the leak appears to be at a Fuel Injector, replace the Fuel Injector or seal in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Visually inspect for signs of fuel leaks at the high pressure fuel tube and Fuel Injectors.
- CHECK THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR READING
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.NOTE:
Typically the desired fuel rail pressure should be at of above approximately 2000 kpa (600 psi) at idle.
- With the scan tool, monitor the desired and actual fuel rail pressure reading.
Is the desired and actual fuel rail pressure value reading above 4137 kpa (290 psi)?
Yes
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
No
- Go To 5
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- CHECK THE LOW FUEL PRESSURE SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Perform the CHECKING THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM test procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM - DIRECT INJECTION FUEL SYSTEMS
.
Were any issues found with the low pressure system?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Perform the CHECKING THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM test procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM - DIRECT INJECTION FUEL SYSTEMS
.
- ISOLATE AND LOAD TEST THE FUEL QUANTITY SOLENOID (N18) HIGH SIDE CONTROL CIRCUIT TO CHECK FOR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES .
CAUTION:Do not load test any circuits with components still connected to the circuit.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Fuel Quantity Solenoid harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Load test the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (N18) High Side Control circuit.NOTE:
The bulb on the load test tool should be illuminated and bright if there is no resistance in the circuit. Compare the brightness of the bulb in the load test tool to that of a direct connection across Battery.
Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (N18) High Side Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- ISOLATE AND LOAD TEST THE FUEL QUANTITY SOLENOID (N17) LOW SIDE CONTROL CIRCUIT TO CHECK FOR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Load test the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (N17) Low Side Control circuit.
Is the load test bulb illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Repair the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (N17) Low Side Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Load test the Fuel Quantity Solenoid (N17) Low Side Control circuit.
- CHECK THE (K859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Disconnect the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K859) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Repair the (K859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K917) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AND OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (K917) Sensor Ground circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Repair the (K917) Sensor Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K917) Sensor Ground circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- CHECK THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR (K359) PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AND OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K359) Pressure Signal circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Repair the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K359) Pressure Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K359) Pressure Signal circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- CHECK THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR (K179) PRESSURE SIGNAL 2 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K179) Pressure Signal 2 circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K179) Pressure Signal 2 circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (K179) Pressure Signal 2 circuit between the FRP Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- REPLACE THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTC
- Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, FUEL RAIL PRESSURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Connect all previously disconnected harness connectors.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 13
No
- Replacing the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- REPLACE THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP/FUEL QUANTITY SOLENOID ASSEMBLY AND RETEST FOR DTCS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Replace the High Pressure Fuel Pump/Fuel Quantity Solenoid Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
- Connect the component and Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 14
No
- Replacing the High Pressure Fuel Pump/Fuel Quantity Solenoid Assembly repaired the fault.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
