Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Diagnose and repair any Boost Pressure or MAP Sensor DTCs before proceeding with this test.
NOTE:Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the CHECKING FOR AN INTERMITTENT DTC diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
- CHECKING THE MAP SENSOR
- Perform the diagnostic procedure for CHECKING THE MAP SENSOR OPERATION. Refer to CHECKING THE MAP SENSOR PERFORMANCE
.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- Perform the diagnostic procedure for CHECKING THE MAP SENSOR OPERATION. Refer to CHECKING THE MAP SENSOR PERFORMANCE
.
- CHECKING THE BAROMETRIC PRESSURE SENSOR NOTE:
The Barometric Pressure Sensor is internal to the PCM.
NOTE:The Barometric Pressure should be approximately equal to the actual barometric pressure. If necessary, compare the Barometric Pressure value of the tested vehicle to the value of a known good vehicle of a similar make and model.
- Compare the Barometric Pressure of the tested vehicle to the value of a known good vehicle of a similar make and model.
Is the Barometric Pressure value of the tested vehicle equal to the value of the know good vehicle (plus or minus 2%)?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Compare the Barometric Pressure of the tested vehicle to the value of a known good vehicle of a similar make and model.
- CHECK THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between ground and the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.NOTE:
The voltage should be 5.0 volts (plus or minus 0.1 of a volt).
Is the voltage displayed as described above?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Go To 12
- CHECK FOR THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K37) BOOST PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE (K37) BOOST PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between ground and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check The (K37) BOOST PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK FOR THE (K37) BOOST PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- Check for continuity between the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (K37) BOOST PRESSURE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
When checking circuits at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), be careful not to damage or distort the connector terminals. Improper measurement technique could result in poor pin to terminal contact.
- Measure the resistance of the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Repair the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- CHECK THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
When checking circuits at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), be careful not to damage or distort the connector terminals. Improper measurement technique could result in poor pin to terminal contact.
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Repair the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.
- CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Connect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Connect a jumper wire between the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit and the (K37) Boost Pressure Signal circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read the Boost Pressure Sensor signal voltage.NOTE:
The voltage should be 0.0 volts (plus or minus 0.1 of a volt) with the jumper wire in place.
Is the voltage on the scan tool displayed as described above?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Go To 17
- CHECK THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between ground and the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 13
- CHECK THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 14
- CHECK FOR THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit and the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 15
- Check for continuity between the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (F859) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
When checking circuits at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), be careful not to damage or distort the connector terminals. Improper measurement technique could result in poor pin to terminal contact.
- Measure the resistance of the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 16
No
- Repair the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (F859) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the Boost Pressure Sensor harness connector and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector.
- BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Boost Pressure Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related connectors.
- Monitor the scan tool data relative to this circuit and wiggle test the wiring and connectors.
- Look for the data to change or for the DTC to reset during the wiggle test.
- Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Boost Pressure Sensor. Refer to SENSOR, TURBO BOOST PRESSURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
