Load Limiter

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jeep Renegade. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

A load-limiting device is integral to the front seat belt retractors to supplement the dual lower anchor and retractor tensioners. The load limiter is also used on the outboard rear seat belt retractors to supplement the retractor tensioners in vehicles manufactured for EMEA markets. The load limiter decreases the force transmitted by the seat belt to the chest of the occupant being restrained. The force level at which the limiters act is sufficient to considerably reduce the risk of skeletal fractures, even in individuals who might suffer from brittle bones.

A load limiter cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, the entire front or rear outboard seat belt and retractor unit must be replaced. If the front airbags have been deployed, the retractor and anchor tensioners have also been deployed. The retractor and anchor tensioners are not intended for reuse and must be replaced following any front airbag deployment. Refer to RETRACTOR, SEAT BELT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
