WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

NOTE:

The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged SAB. If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the SAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

Position the SAB unit (1a) close enough to the outboard side of the seat back frame to connect the seat wire harness connector (1b) to the SAB inflator. Be certain that the connector latches and lock are fully engaged.
Position the SAB unit to the outboard side of the seat back frame and insert the studs through the mounting holes in the frame.

Move aside the seat back padding (1) far enough to access and install the ground wire (3) eyelet terminal over the upper SAB stud on the inside of the seat back frame.
Install and tighten the fasteners (2) that secure the SAB to the inside of the seat back frame. Tighten the fasteners to the proper specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

Engage the cord (3a) that secures the seat back pad to the button (3b) on the outboard side of the seat back frame.
Zip up (2) the outboard side of the seat back trim cover.
Engage the J-channel (1) that secures the front of the seat back trim cover to the back.
Do not connect the negative battery cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
