Noise Coming From The AWD System

1 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK DATA USING DIAGNOSIS EQUIPMENT OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Traction control module Connect the diagnostic equipment and save the report with the vehicle information. Go to Step 2  - -
2 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK REAR DIFFERENTIAL CLASSIFICATION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Rear differential Connect the diagnosis equipment and check the rear differential classification Go to Step 3  - Position the vehicle on the lift and check that the value detected using the diagnostic equipment corresponds to the number printed on the label present on the rear differential.
3 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK USING DIAGNOSIS EQUIPMENT OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Rear differential Check the presence of low frequency noise Go to Step 4  Presence of low frequency noise Drive the vehicle with the selector in AUTO mode, check the AWD state signal using the diagnostic equipment: 4Hi Keep vehicle speed higher than 40 km/h (25 mph) until the AWD signal switches 2WD Press the Lock button on the terrain selector or select SNOW, SAND or MUD mode (ROCK mode, if available). If the noise is heard when the system is in 2WD mode and remains until 4HI or 4WDLock is selected, the origin of the problem is the rear differential. Replace the PTU and run the initialization procedure by means of the diagnostic equipment.
4 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK FOR BACKLASH IN THE TRANSMISSION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Transmission Run a preliminary check on the all-wheel drive system Go to Step 5  The clunking noise can be heard Position the vehicle on the lift and check for presence of backlash in the transmission
5 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK AXIAL AND RADIAL BACKLASH OF REAR WHEEL DRIVE TRANSMISSION SHAFT OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Propeller shaft Check axial and radial backlash between rear wheel drive transmission shaft and PTU Go to Step 6  Presence of axial and radial backlash In presence of axial backlash, check state of seals and O-rings, that they are correctly positioned in their housings and that they are not damaged or missing. If needed, replace and run a road test. In presence of radial backlash between tear wheel drive transmission shaft and PTU remove the tear wheel drive transmission shaft and check wear by inspecting the inner race (PTU side) and the outer race (tear wheel drive transmission shaft side). Collect information on the concerned unit and then contact FCA to learn how to proceed. Replace all parts in all cases.
6 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK AXIAL AND RADIAL BACKLASH OF THE PROPELLER SHAFT OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Propeller shaft Check axial and radial backlash between the propeller shaft and PTU Go to Step 7  Presence of axial and radial backlash In presence of axial backlash, check state of the O-ring, that it is correctly positioned in its housing and that it is not damaged or missing. Test the vehicle on the road and check that the problem is solved. Visually inspect under the body checking that all components are mounted correctly. Then remove the rear wheel drive transmission shaft, install the ring correctly and take the vehicle for a test drive. In presence of radial backlash, remove the rear wheel drive transmission shaft and check wear. Check the rear differential pinion. Proceed by replacing the propeller shaft.
7 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK REAR DIFFERENTIAL STUB SHAFT RADIAL BACKLASH OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
stub shaft Check rear differential stub shaft radial backlash Go to Step 8  Presence of radial backlash If the stub shaft has a radial backlash greater than 0.5 mm (0.02 in), it means that the support is worn. Extract the driveshaft and check what is causing the backlash. If the shaft moves radially, replace the rear differential.
8 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK REAR DIFFERENTIAL OPERATION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Rear differential Connect the diagnostic equipment and take the vehicle for a road test with the selector in AUTO AWD mode: 4Hi Go to Step 9  Noise audible when signal switches, clunk noise. Hold the vehicle speed higher than 40 km/h (25 mph) until the AWD signal switches to 2WD. Press the Lock button on the terrain selector or select SNOW-SAND or MUD mode (ROCK mode, if available). If the noise can be heard while switching, go to the workshop and check the rear differential. Extract the right driveshaft in axial direction: if the displacement is equal to or greater than 1 cm (0.39 in) replace the rear differential and initialize using the diagnostic equipment.
9 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK THE PROPELLER SHAFT OPERATION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Propeller shaft Connect the diagnostic equipment and take the vehicle for a road test with the selector in AUTO AWD mode: 4Hi Go to Step 10  Noise audible when signal switches Hold the vehicle speed higher than 40 km/h (25 mph) until the AWD signal switches to 2WD. Using the diagnostic equipment check that the AWD signal switches from 4Hi to 2WD. The noise should disappear when the vehicle is in 2WD. Remove the propeller shaft, check that the connection with the PTU is in good conditions and correctly greased. If it is dry, replace the PTU and run the initialization procedure by means of the diagnostic equipment.
10 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK THE PROPELLER SHAFT OPERATION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
Propeller shaft (1.4 Turbo Multiair versions only) Take the vehicle for a test drive with the selector in Lock position Go to Step 11  Vibration perceivable when driving faster than 150 km/h (93 mph) for some minutes and disappears when the vehicle speed is more or less 110 km/h (68 mph) Replace the propeller shaft
11 COMPONENT CONCERNED CHECK AWD SYSTEM OPERATION OK (NO FAULTS DETECTED) FAULT DETECTED OPERATION
AWD system Check correct operation of the AWD system on the road test End of diagnosis Noises audible during test on road test Disconnect the rear suspension axle using the diagnostic equipment and road test the vehicle. If noise is audible also in this condition the problem does not concern the AWD.
