Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR ANY SERVICE BULLETINS OR PCM SOFTWARE UPDATES 
    1. Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.

      Are there any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

  3. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.
      NOTE:

      An active SKIM code can cause this DTC to set. This may happen because the PCM will turn off the actuation of the VVA Actuators but is still monitoring the parameters of the VVA high oil pressure absent monitor. Diagnose any SKIM Module DTCs that are present before continuing with this test procedure. This code can also set due to an issue with the MAP sensor.

      Are there any SKIM, MAP Sensor, or 5-Volt Reference DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR PROPER VOLTAGE AT THE MAP SENSOR HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the harness connector at the component of the circuit being tested. Note:  The ECU harness connector should still be connected during this test step.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Set the DVOM to measure DC voltage.
    5. Connect the negative lead of the DVOM to a known good ground.
    6. With the positive lead of the DVOM, measure the voltage of the circuit being tested at the component harness connector.
      NOTE:

      Normal operating voltage should be between 4.8 and 5.2 volts.

      Does the circuit have the proper voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the circuit for an open or short. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuit and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the issue.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. INSPECT THE MAP SENSOR CONDITION 
    1. Remove and inspect the MAP Sensor inlet port for any signs of blockage, debris, or contamination.

      Were any issues found with the condition of the MAP Sensor?

      Yes 

      • Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s).

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE ENGINE OILING SYSTEM 
    1. Check the engine for the following:
      • LOW ENGINE OIL
      • INCORRECT OIL FILTER THAT DOES NOT MEET OEM SPECIFICATIONS
      • OIL DIRTY OR DETERIORATED (Lack of scheduled oil changes)
      • INCORRECT VISCOSITY AND WEIGHT
      • ENGINE OIL CONTAMINATED (i.e., coolant, fuel, water etc.)

      Is oil level, type, and condition correct?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Correct the engine oil level or change the engine oil and filter as required. Consult the Service Information for correct type and grade of engine oil. If the engine oil is contaminated, repair the source of contamination as necessary in accordance with the Service Information and check if other damage may have occurred.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK OIL PRESSURE / ENGINE MECHANICAL 
    1. Install a mechanical oil pressure gauge in accordance with the Service Information.
    2. Monitor the mechanical oil pressure gauge while cranking the engine for at least 10 seconds.
      NOTE:

      The actuators will not operate if the oil pressure is too low or too high.

      Is the oil pressure between 0.8 bar (11.6 psi) and 7.5 bar (108.8 psi)?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Repair the engine oiling system as necessary in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. ENGINE MECHANICAL 
    1. Perform a cylinder leak down test.

      Were any leaks found during the cylinder leak down test?

      Yes 

      • Inspect for a broken timing belt and/or bent or broken valves. Perform the appropriate repair.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK THE PCM OUTPUT TO THE VVA SOLENOIDS 
    NOTE:

    Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the VVA Solenoid wiring and connectors. Check for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact.

    1. Using a 12-volt test light, back probe across the solenoid control circuit and return circuit of one of the VVA Solenoids.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. With the scan tool, actuate the VVA Solenoid that has the 12-volt test light is connected to it.

      Does the test light illuminate brightly when actuated on?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly in accordance with the Service Information.
        NOTE:

        If you suspect an oil supply issue to the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly and Cylinder Head, there is a oil filter screen that is located in the oil supply passage of the Cylinder Block beneath the Cylinder Head. To inspect it will require the removal of the Cylinder Head. Validate all other options before disassembly.

      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
