Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR ANY SERVICE BULLETINS OR PCM SOFTWARE UPDATES
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
Are there any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates?
Yes
- Perform the applicable repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 2
- Check for any applicable Service Bulletins or Flash updates related to the DTC.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- CHECK THE VVA SOLENOID 3 TOTAL CIRCUIT RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the PCM C2 harness connector.NOTE:
The tolerance in the next step is very small. Ensure that there is a good connection between the PCM C2 connector and the GPEC Adaptor and that it is stable. Any movement of the GPEC Adaptor can cause a variation in the reading. Be certain to zero the meter before taking the measurement in the next step. Failure to do so may cause a false failure.
- Measure the resistance across the terminals of the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the total circuit resistance less than 2.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (N36) VVA SOLENOID 3 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit between the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector at the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (N37) VVA SOLENOID 3 RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit between the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 2.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit between the VVA Solenoid 3 harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.
- CHECK THE VVA SOLENOID FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Measure the resistance across the terminals of the VVA Solenoid (component side).
Is the resistance between 0.2 and 1.0 Ohms?
Yes
- The likely cause is the VVA Solenoid connector is not fully seated, or an intermittent connection due to chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires or broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that the VVA Solenoid connector is fully seated and that the connector lock is properly engaged. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors at the VVA Solenoid, PCM, and any in-line connectors. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in at all connectors. Check for and perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . After replacing the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly, perform the "Reset VCM Adaptives" procedure with the scan tool. This function should be run after a VVA Actuator has been installed to prevent a false failure by resetting the adaptive memory back to the base calibration.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance across the terminals of the VVA Solenoid (component side).
- CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
The ignition must be off during this test step. Verify that the ignition is off.
- Remove the GPEC Adaptor from the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Connect the GPEC Adaptor to the Powertrain Control Module.
- Measure the resistance of the PCM driver across the terminals of the (N36) VVA Solenoid 3 Signal circuit and the (N37) VVA Solenoid 3 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.NOTE:
The normal resistance across the driver circuits in the PCM should be approximately 15k Ohms.
Is the resistance between approximately 14k and 16k Ohms?
Yes
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors at the VVA Solenoid, PCM, and any in-line connectors. The likely cause is an intermittent connection due to chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires or broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact at all connectors. Check for and perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
