Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- CHECK THE ENTIRE VVA SOLENOID 2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and either the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit or the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.NOTE:
This step is a quick check to test for a short to ground in the entire circuit including the solenoid and either circuit.
Is there continuity between ground and the VVA Solenoid circuits?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE (N34) VVA SOLENOID 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect the VVA Solenoid 2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.
Is there continuity between ground and the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (N35) VVA SOLENOID 2 RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.
Is there continuity between ground and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Check for continuity between ground and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.
- CHECK THE VVA SOLENOID FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Check for continuity between ground and either terminal of the VVA Solenoid (component side).
Is there continuity between ground and either terminal of the VVA Solenoid?
Yes
- Replace the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . After replacing the Variable Valve Actuator Assembly, perform the "Reset VCM Adaptives" procedure with the scan tool. This function should be run after a VVA Actuator has been installed to prevent a false failure by resetting the adaptive memory back to the base calibration.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The likely cause is an intermittent short to ground. Check for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires between the VVA Solenoid and PCM. Check for and perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check for continuity between ground and either terminal of the VVA Solenoid (component side).
- CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FOR PROPER OPERATION NOTE:
The ignition must be off during this test step. Verify that the ignition is off.
- Remove the GPEC Adaptor from the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Connect the GPEC Adaptor to the Powertrain Control Module.
- Measure the resistance of the PCM driver across the terminals of the (N34) VVA Solenoid 2 Signal circuit and the (N35) VVA Solenoid 2 Return circuit at the GPEC Adaptor.NOTE:
The normal resistance across the driver circuits in the PCM should be approximately 15k Ohms.
Is the resistance between approximately 14k and 16k Ohms?
Yes
- The likely cause is an intermittent short to ground. Check for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires between the VVA Solenoid and PCM. Check for and perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
