Catalytic Converter: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Remove the intake air tube. Refer to TUBE, INTAKE AIR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove the turbocharger heat shield. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

  8. Disengage the upper retaining clips (1a) of the pressurized coolant bottle (1b).
  9. Disengage the lower retaining clip (2a) and reposition the pressurized coolant bottle (1b).

  10. Unlock and disconnect the upstream oxygen sensor wire harness connector (1).
  11. Open the clips (2) and release the wiring.

  12. Unlock and disconnect the downstream oxygen sensor wire harness connector (1).
  13. Open the clip (2) and release the wiring.

  14. Remove the bolts (1a) and nuts (1b) and remove the upper catalytic converter mounting bracket (1c).

  15. Loosen the collar bolt (1) securing the catalytic converter to the turbocharger.

  16. Remove the nuts (1a) and remove the exhaust pipe (1b) from the catalytic converter.
  17. Remove the gasket.

  18. Remove the nuts (1) from the exhaust pipe flange.
  19. Remove the bolts (2) securing the catalytic converter support bracket to the crankcase.
  20. Remove the bolts (3) from the side mounting brackets.

  21. Remove the catalytic converter assembly (1).

  22. If required, remove the nuts and the lower mounting bracket (1) from the catalytic converter.

  23. If required, remove the upstream oxygen sensor (1) from the catalytic converter.

  24. If required, remove the downstream oxygen sensor (1) from the catalytic converter.

  25. If required, remove the bolts (1a), nut (1b) and the heat shield (1c) from the catalytic converter.
