Removal And Installation: Removal

  1. Remove the timing chain cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  2. Inspect the timing chain for excessive wear prior to removal. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, INSPECTION .

  3. Position the number one cylinder piston to top-dead-center on the compression stroke.
    NOTE:

    If the timing chain plated links (1) can no longer be seen, the timing chain links corresponding to the timing marks (2) must be marked prior to removal if the chain is to be reused.

  4. Mark chain link (1) corresponding to crankshaft sprocket timing mark (2).

  5. While maintaining this alignment, verify that the camshaft dowel (2) is at the 12 o'clock position. The dowel center line (1) will be 90° from the horizontal surface line at the top of the cylinder head (3).

  6. Mark the chain link (1) corresponding to camshaft sprocket timing mark (2).

  7. Reset the timing chain tensioner.

  8. Hold the camshaft stationary by the wrench flats (1).

  9. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt (1).
  10. Once the sprocket is clear of the alignment dowel, lower the sprocket and remove the timing chain.

  11. If required, remove the tensioner arm bolt (3), bushing and tensioner arm (4).
  12. If required, remove the fixed chain guide bolts (2) and the timing chain guide (1).
