Engine And Transmission Separation- 2.4L MULTIAIR Fwd: Removal

  1. Remove the bolt (1) and remove the exhaust pipe support bracket.

  2. Disengage the wire harness retainer (1) from the upper radiator inlet hose at the thermostat housing.

  3. Loosen the CLIC E®  type clamp using the Pliers, Hose Clamp (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the upper radiator inlet (2) and lower radiator outlet (1) hoses.

  4. Loosen the CLIC E®  type clamp using the Pliers, Hose Clamp (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the engine oil cooler inlet (1) and outlet (2) hoses.

  5. Disconnect the quick-connect coupling and remove the heater core inlet hose (1) from the thermostat housing.
  6. Loosen the CLIC E®  type clamp using the Pliers, Hose Clamp (special tool #10288, Pliers, Hose Clamp) and remove the heater core outlet hose (2) from the coolant return pipe.
  7. Remove the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. Refer to SENSOR, OXYGEN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  8. Remove the bolts (2, 3) and the catalytic converter lower support bracket (1).

  9. Remove the catalytic converter heat shields from the exhaust manifold.

  10. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts (1). Remove the manifold and DISCARD  the exhaust manifold gasket.

  11. Remove the bolt (2) retaining the torque converter bolt access cover (1).

    NOTE:

    There are three pairs of bolts 120° apart attaching the flexplate to the torque converter.

  12. Through the access door opening, remove the bolts (1) holding the flexplate to the torque converter. Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.

  13. Remove the three oil pan to transmission bolts (1).
  14. Affix a chain to the transmission mount bracket to be used as a lifting point.
  15. Using an engine hoist, remove the slack from the lifting chain.

  16. Remove the left upper transmission to engine bolt (2) and bracket (1).

  17. Remove the left lower bolt (1) holding the transmission to the engine block.

  18. Remove the right upper transmission to engine bolt (1).
  19. Remove the upper starter bolt (2).

  20. Remove the lower starter bolt (1) and the starter (2) from the transmission bellhousing.

  21. Remove the left engine to transmission bolt (1) and bracket (2).
  22. Using a suitable prying tool, pry the bell housing away from the engine block.
