Main Bearing Selection
There are three different possibilities for the upper main bearings and five different lower main bearings. The upper and lower bearing shells are not interchangeable.
Crankshaft thrust bearings are not selectable and are only available in a single thickness.
Bearing oil clearance can also be determined by using Plastigage or equivalent. Refer to MEASURING BEARING CLEARANCE USING PLASTIGAGE .
The upper and lower main bearings are "select fit" to achieve proper oil clearances. The lower crankshaft main bearing journal diameter grade markings (2) are stamped into the nose of the crankshaft (3). These marks are read from left to right (clockwise), corresponding with journal number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Crankshaft lower main bearing journal diameter grade markings correspond to specific journal diameters. The chart below identifies the five crankshaft grade markings and their associated journal diameters.
| Crankshaft Marking | Journal Size mm (in.) |
|---|---|
| 0 | 51.985 - 51.988 mm (2.0466 - 2.0468 in.) |
| 1 | 51.982 - 51.985 mm (2.0465 - 2.0466 in.) |
| 2 | 51.979 - 51.982 mm (2.0464 - 2.0465 in.) |
| 3 | 51.976 - 51.979 mm (2.0463 - 2.0464 in.) |
| 4 | 51.973 - 51.976 mm (2.0462 - 2.0463 in.) |
The lower main bearing shells are marked with a color code indicating bearing size. The bearings are available in five different sizes in order to achieve the desired oil clearance.
Crankshaft lower main bearing shells are available in five sizes. The chart below identifies the five bearing sizes.
| Bearing Marking | Size mm (in.) |
|---|---|
| 0 (Pink or Red) | 1.997 - 2.000 mm (0.0786 - 0.0787 in.) |
| 1 (Black) | 2.000 - 2.003 mm (0.0787 - 0.0788 in.) |
| 2 (No Color) | 2.003 - 2.006 mm (0.0788 - 0.0789 in.) |
| 3 (Green) | 2.006 - 2.009 mm (0.0789 - 0.0791 in.) |
| 4 (Blue) | 2.009 - 2.012 mm (0.0791 - 0.0792 in.) |
Engine block upper main bearing journal diameter grade markings (1) are stamped into the right side of the engine block. These marks are read from right to left (top to bottom), corresponding with journal number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Engine block lower main bearing journal grade markings correspond to specific journal diameters. The chart below identifies the three engine block grade markings and their associated journal diameters.
| Engine Block Marking | Journal Size mm (in.) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 56.000 - 56.006 mm (2.2047 - 2.2050 in.) |
| 2 | 56.006 - 56.012 mm (2.2050 - 2.2052 in.) |
| 3 | 56.012 - 56.018 mm (2.2052 - 2.2054 in.) |
The upper main bearing shells (1) are marked with a color code indicating bearing size. The bearings are available in three different sizes in order to achieve the desired oil clearance.
Crankshaft upper main bearing shells are available in three sizes. The chart below identifies the three bearing sizes.
| Bearing Marking | Size mm (in.) |
|---|---|
| 1 (Black) | 1.994 - 2.000 mm (0.0785 - 0.0787 in.) |
| 2 (No Color) | 2.000 - 2.006 mm (0.0787 - 0.0789 in.) |
| 3 (Green) | 2.006 - 2.012 mm (0.0789 - 0.0792 in.) |
